Front Speakers for 450SL

I'm replacing the blown front speakers in my 75 450SL.

I believe that the biggest speaker that would fit in the dash space is 4".

What recommendations do you have for current speakers. So far, I've found the options of:

-MB Quart Discus 4" DKD 110s for $65
-Infinity Kappa 42.5i 4" for $62

Can anyone speak to which of these would work or another kind that would be better?

Thanks!

A new stock OEM MBZ 4" is not too bad. Not in the class of the above listed speakers, but for around $25, pretty good. Their magnets are fairly heavy and they have rubber surrounds.

The part #124 820 40 02 I believe has been superceded several times but that will get you close.

Just installed the Pioneer TS-A1057 4" 2-Way Speaker 100 Watts Max. Power (PAIR) over the weekend. Good sound and reasonably priced at $39.99 off the following site: http://www.etronics.com/ .

Don

Any clearance problems, between the OEM grill and the tweeter?

No problem whatsoever with the mounting depth. However, getting the cover to slip back on the little bar holding the speaker in might make you want to pull you hair out!!!

BTW, those are fairly expensive speakers on most other sites, but these folks' prices are hard to beat. Somebody in a post up above receommended a pair of Infinity (?) speakers. Check their price at etronics and you'll find that particular pair about a hundred dollars cheaper.

I've got http://www.etronics.com bookmarked and will use those folks again. Don't know 'em and have no interest in their business, but they have a terrific inventory and provided me good service.

I know this is an old thread. I'm wondering if there are any new ideas.

Are the MB Quarts and the Infinitys drop in replacements?

I tried to fit some old 4" Clarions into my front dash. There is very little clearance, even with cutting down the Clarion frames. They bump into the passenger side vent. I haven't tried the driver's side, which looks like it has even less clearance.

Thanks
Al

Me too...
Also, what is the model number of the MB Quarts and where do you purchase? I tried the etronics link on '03 post above, but they don't have that model number. Am I to assume that these are OEM for the '84sl dash speakers?
Thank you in advance.
Jo
