ALLO.
My 1993 MB 190E, 2.3 battery died. It was re-charged but the radio reads 'code'. The shop popped it out & wrote the numbers from it down, called around, & the code s/b XXXX. I entered the 'new' code but it does not work. nor does the 'old code'. the manual says the radio will go to 'hold' for 15 min, then hold for another 15 mins, the will lock-out for 24hrs. what to do ? tks in adcvance.... ![]()

If the code does not work, 3 possibilities:
a) The dealer goofed when he gave you the code number b) You goofed when you wrote the code number down c) The radio was replaced before you got the car, hense the wrong code Good luck JackD |

THE SHOP CALLED & SAID: THE CODE IS XXXXX A 5 FIVE DIGIT NUMBER. THE MANUAL SPEAKS ABOUT 'ENTERING THE FOUR (4) DIGIT NUMBER. I AM CONFUSED. I TRIED BOTH WAYS, BUT NO SUCCESS. NOW, THE RADIO READS: CODE. WHAT'S NEXT.? I HAVE THE NUMBERS FROM THE BACK OF THE RADIO. ???

allo.
I enter a number, it flashes the number I enter. I enter next number, it flashes both numbers. same with the 3rd number then with the 4th number, all four numbers flash. then I push the * to confirm, it shows, code which means, iIthink, I'm back to start. I also think the 5 digit code from the shop is inaccurate.

Conrad,
I'm not sure where Mokelume Hill is, but if you are anywhere near a Mercedes Benz dealership, have them look up the code in the database and have them enter it. Ask at the service desk. They "should" do this for you without cost. Be sure to have the radio serial number and VIN number handy. |

I thought I had a bad code on one of the radios until I discovered that the buttons like deliberate pushes .... seemingly harder, much hard than changing a channel. (I know it is just an electronic button) but that is what I did and it worked.

My handy dandy MB radio code book S-2474-99B (printed in 2001) says that radios made from MY 1990 to 1993 have 4 diget codes and as of MY 1994 radios (Alpine and Becker) have 5 diget codes.
Here are the instructions: (for a five diget code) " 1. Turn ignition key to position 2 2. Turn radio on. "CODE" appears on the display. 3. Enter first diget of anti-theft code from CODE card. "CODE" will diappear and the entered diget will appear followed by four dashes. 4. The next diget to be entered flashes. When all five digits are entered, the first digit flashes again. Verify that the correct code is on the display. If a wrong digit was entered, re-enter complete code until correct code is displayed. 5. press SC, Seek or Tune button to confirm code. Radio will resume normal operation " It goes on to give time intervals to wait if one enters improperly. I might point out that those intervals require the radio to be left on! If 24 hrs, we remove radio and power it on the bench for 24 hours. I also noticed that there is a 5 digit code radio in 1990 Alpines (changed in 1991 to four digit)

PM me the serial number from the back of your radio and I will get you your radio code (there is a function on Netstar that lets us pull them up instantly).

RADIO CODE MYSTERY CONTINUES....
ALLO.
Phaedrus 242 was going to assist, but faded away. a/o now...i have two sets of codes. 1. 4 digit code from original paperwork on car. 2. 5 digit code, taken from the #'s off the back of current radio in car, which was checked somehow, somewhere by the shop. Neither seem to work. I may not be pushing hard enuf on the buttons. A concern. I only have 1 or 2 attempts remaining to try before it locks down for 24 hrs with the key/radio on.... So, i need to 'get it right', now..... I am not a tech. I am a klutz, so I will not try to pop the radio out. Need I mention, how annoying this mess continues to be. It's almost as bad as trying to get a key cut w/o going to the dealer.....without your passport and as pint of blood from aunt lulu..... pls advise ![]()

I'm not sure what to tell you. Are the numbers apearing as you set them? Have you had the code (you think) displayed and then hit any of the buttons that set the code?
Just placing and changing the numbers doesn't constitute a "try".

radio mystery....
THANK YOU FOR THE QUICK REPLY.
I've tried this: entered 1st digit- it flashed the same digit ''''' 2nd it flashed the same digit plus 1st ''''' 3rd it flashed the same digit plus 1-2 ''''' 4th it flashed all above '''' 5th it flashed all above entered * to confirm after a few seconds, it showed 'code' I did the same procedure @ the 4 digit code. same results. Seems to me, it's either: the code or the technique. what to do ?

It seems that you are doing it correctly, if I am understanding you correctly. From what you say I assume that before you confirm you see the numbers displayed (12345 say), and then confirm.
I get radio codes from my dealer for free from the chassis number (I'm a good customer), but when the radio has been changed the number will be no good of course. We repair Becker Radios, but my brother does it and I don't know the procedures. The codes for Becker can be had from Becker after proof of ownership from the radio serial number. They will give us the number (over the phone) but they charge us (you) and mail us (you) a new code card. My brother could probably tell you the Alpine story, but I don't know it.
