how do I know if I can put in a cd player?

I recently bought a 93 400E and it has the original Becker radio/cassette player in it. Well the other day I went to play the cassette and when I put the cassette in, rather than it grabbing the tape and pulling it in, it just kinda sat there and when I tried to push the tape in it buzzed and pushed the tape back out.

My question is, since I want to be able to play cd's, how can I tell if it has the connector(s) so that I can put in a CDplayer/changer in the trunk? I dont mind that the cassette doesnt work properly if I have the ability to jam listening to cd's.

Also does anyone have recommendations as to what brand of cd player/changer is best? I dont need anything that has a bass that vibrates all of the surrounding cars at stoplights.

Thanks,
Frank

I assume you're wondering if it has the wiring for the OEM trunk changer, so the best way to confirm that is to pull the trunk liner on the passenger side and locate the unused wire harness/din plug for the changer.

If the cables are there, does your headunit have the CD controls? If not, I would suggest an MP3 capable car stereo so that you have the option of playing standard CD's or hours of MP3 car tunes.

Thanks. I will pull the liner and check it out.

My head unit does NOT have controls for cd. It is just your standard Becker AM/FM with cassette.

Just because the radio doesn't say "CD" on any buttons, it may still be able to control it. Does it have a "source" or "band" button on it? In 1993 I think the E-Class radio could operate a CD Changer. In my 92 Range Rover (with factory CD Changer, best fac system I have heard yet!) access to the CD is achieved by hitting the band button, and it will only go to CD mode if a changer is attached. Your preset buttons control the disc and tune / seek changes track. I know on the 94-95 w124 E classes radios can certainly control a CD changer (they have a "CD" button) If your vehicle has the cables it definitely means your stock Becker unit can control a factory changer.

Thanks Troverman. I will check it out.

My boss has a '94 E420 and his radio looks completely different than mine. My volume control is the ol' flat lever that you either pull up or push down to control the volume. His has a knob that you actually turn (much better I prefer).

I think on the 90 through 93 Beckers the first small button above the tape deck, it says "MOD" on it is "Mode" and that's for the CD if you have it. The small one to the right of the volume control.
