My White/Blue 1988 560SEC w/30K miles is mechanically and cosmetically excellent. During the past 2 years I have not used it much, maybe once a month. I would wash the car, dry it and park it in the garage until next time. Once a month or so I would take it for a ride with my wife to show her it still hits 140mph and to reopen the communication lines between the engine and the redline. Anyways, the rear window seal seems to be a water collection device. I recently noticed that underneath the seal the car is starting to rust and by pressing on the seal water came out. You can't see the rust unless you lift the seal or get inside the trunk and take a really good look. I am going to take the car to the body shop to remove the rear window and install a new seal(from PartsShop, of course, if they sell it)as well as fixing any rust.
Question #1: Is there any sealant that should be applied when reinstalling the new seal to prevent future leaks or water retention? Question #2: What is the price range for a factory-like paint job? |

LJADJA,
Submit a parts inquiry for the seal and we'll get right on it. If you are having a specific shop do all this work they may want to supply their own parts. As we've said before, it is sort of bad form to bring standard parts into a service center much as it would be bringing your eggs to waffle house. If the shop where you are taking the car doesn't have a problem using your parts we will be happy to supply you with it. We just don't want to step on any toes. (professionally speaking of course) It is hard to say what a factory quality paint job will cost as it may be tough to find a bodyshop that does (or will do) such work. Your best bet is to ask local MBCA members who is the best in the area. It may also help to ask around the site based on your geographic area. If you are having the whole car repainted then color matching and matching of the orange peel is very important. If you are doing a total repaint, it may not be as obvious if they are not spot on. Hope this helps...Lee |
