How do you remove window tint?

I just got a car that has the remains of window tint on the rear door windows and some more on the rear window that has a defogger with wires embedded on the inside of it and a third brake light.

How can I get the rest of the tint off? It looks like it was probably a DIY install that went badly wrong ...

Don't want to wreck the defog wires on the inside glass in the process either?

Straight razor for the inside windows maybe, bu what about behind the 3rd brake light that I dont want to remove to get at the remains of tint behind it?

I used full strength Simple Green and a razor and that worked well. My '83 has the vertical wires embedded into the glass, not the horizontal ones on the outside.

I've only taken it off of windows where there was no defroster grid, but it was pretty easy with just water and a plastic squeegee like you use to put the tint on with. Once you get a coner up that you can get a grip on, if you peel it straight back from the corner where you began, it comes of pretty easily.

Getting the tint spooge off the glass takes a bit of cleaning, but even that's not too bad.

The way I always remove tint in the past is with a heat gun. It makes the job so much easier. It shouldn't take you more then 20 minutes to remove all the tint on the back window. Even with the defrost wire that YOU DON"T want to cut through.

Your going to start at the top left or right corner. Heat up the tint and use a blade to remove a small area. Your going to want to remove it in one large piece so you don't hvae to pick up 1,000 different little pieces everywhere. Just use the heat gun to heat up the tint before you pell it off.

Becareful not to allow the heat gun to heat up the leather, or plastic areas of the car. Remember, only heat up the tint.

Good luck

I'd like to remove mine, but amonia is almost like pee.Pee causes rust.I really don't want that dripping inside the doors,to rott door skins. So I will find something else.

Soapy water a plastic spatula and a razor blade. Use the razor blade to peel back the edge of the film and spray the soapy water between the film and the glass. Use the spatula to work the soapy water down in between the glass and film to loosen the film.

first you need to peel a corner of the tint from the glass, pull off the entire sheet,it will leave behind the sticky glue, this can be removed from soaking it in hot water, with a strong biodegradable cleaner and a flat edge razor scraper,or try using rubbing alcohol on the glue then razor blade scrape it off.then finish with glass cleaner.
