Heavy smell of diesel . . . . .
If the smoke was caused by oil getting into the system it would smell, well - burnt oil smell, Since you say you smell raw diesel then that is a clue that says the IP is likely involved. Or an injector nozzle is stuck open. I'd loosen the lines to the injectors one at a time to see if the smoking stops. Cover the end with a rag, wear rubber gloves and see if the idle stays the same, it should worsen at each (good) line as they are loosened.
FWIW, I believe there was a set of 5 NA injector nozzles on eBay recently - cheap. And good injection pumps suitable can sometimes be had for $75. DDH

I went to pull injectors last night, and realized I need a "deep" socket 27mm, so I came inside and disassembled our icemaker (nothing works here). I have parenting duty tonight, so I'll probably tackle injectors tomorrow. It does smell very strongly of diesel. Actually, before it started smoking so bad, the fuel milage had dropped by 5mpg, and it smelled very strong of fuel, so it only makes sense that my problem is fuel injection of some sort. I know it's hard to read an entire thread this long, but fuel tank/screen/sending unit has all been done. Fuel from different sources too.
Thanks for the injector and IP information. I'll keep yall posted. Jimmy

Another easy test would be to run the car off of a small tank up by the injector pump like you do in a purge. That would bypass all of your fuel supply and eliminate those possible problems. Not likely it will prove anything though.

Spray pattern
Hello Jimmy
When you pull the injectors, you can check the spray pattern. Note: The diesel fuel will make a mess, be prepared to soak it up under the car and clean it off the engine. Rotate the front lines toward the left fender until you can attach the injectors, tighten all those fittings. Rotate the rear lines toward the oil filter housing until you can attach the injectors, tighten all those fittings. Wear safety glasses or a face shield. Carbon or crud from around the injector holes will fly out with painful force. You will need someone to crank the engine while you are totally focused on the injector spray pattern. You will probably need several long cranks to clear air from the lines. Attached are two pictures, first is a bad spray pattern, and second is a good spray pattern. Here are some links for further education on the subject, please take them with a grain of salt, most are commercial sales and try to panic you into buying. http://www.benzstuff.com/85info.htm http://www.beru.com/english/produkte/dieseleinspritzung.php http://www.peemac.sdnpk.org/resource/fert/tips5.html http://forums.thedieselstop.com/ http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&q=diesel%2Cforum&btnG=Search http://www.indiamart.com/internationalfuelinjectionexports/ Last edited by whunter; 03-12-2011 at 11:47 PM. |

Ol smokey ...
I had a slight miss with my diesel. You may want to check your fuel filter for water. Check the glow plugs/circuit to see if there working correctly. Take a reading with an ohm meter. My cars glow plug reading is 1 ohm. Yours may be different. They should all read the same value.
One interesting thing I tryed was a product called lubro-molly. Do a search on this board ....this stuff really works. The out come was a cloged injector and a glow plug out of spec. Since you were tinkering ...... is there a ground strap from the engine to the body? |

Still smokes. ALOT!
What a beating of a long thread.
I'm pretty much at the end of my ability I think. I pulled all the injectors tonight, totally disassembled each one. The bottom of the injectors, where the needle pokes through, had carbon built up alittle. Also, several were really filled with carbon between the nozzle body and nozzle holder. Also, below the injectors, in block opening, were round washer-looking things. Removed them and chipped all the carbon from them. I also cleaned all parts of injectors, made sure all openings weren't clogged, reassembled and reinstalled. None of the needle seats "looked" bad, but would I really be able to tell? Started the car and it still smokes a ton, and seem to have more of a miss than it has had. Drove it around for 5 minutes or so, and it is still really smoking and does seem to miss. 2 or 3 of the injectors, and below the injectors, was really wet with fuel. Clue? or normal... I can't really afford to go out and buy 5 new injectors anytime soon. Do I just need to park it until I can either buy injectors or take it to a mechanic? I would welcome an opinion on what someone else might do at this point. Reminder, the smoke is white, it does not dissipate, it floats all the way down the road, and it smells of diesel. Jimmy

Jimmy,
Have you tried temporarily removing the Radiator cap as I suggested in an earlier post? Is there noticeably less smoke with the cap removed? Phil
