your chain sounds ok, why ask for trouble.
replacing the chain is a lot more difficult than getting your cam in time..
don't be bent on replacing the chain..
replacing the chain won't fix your problem, getting timing correct will..

today I

Well I dropped the gear but now I have the engine at TDC of the compression stroke all valves are closed the rockers are all back on. At TDC the cam mark is exactly lined up. I turned the engine about 20 times by hand no indication of valves hitting pistons and each time the cam mark is right on at TDC. I need to put all new belts on her and get a valve cover gasket finish reassemble and of course it is raining and it is supposed to poor tomorrow wish I had a garage to work in so it will be a few days till I can get back at it. Then I will know if I did it right or screwed up bad. I would be happy in this case if it was off by a degree or two but no it is dead nuts on 0 degrees of stretch. I would like to thank you all very much for your help so far. It really is a lovely car and to think it was going to the wreckers if I did not buy it. Thanks again!!!

Yeah, they are nice cars, that's why I want to get mine running again.

Guess I'd better go bid on that chain, eh?

Good luck!

there are three chains

It is an EBay store that has the chains I think he has three for like $37 each just hope I don’t end up needing one should know soon if the darn rain lets up. I just got a notice from the city today that all cars had to be running as of three days ago and they were going to send an inspector out. I would have to prove to the inspector that all cars at our house started and were able to drive around the block or I would be fined $250. Well I think these rare classic cars are only insured to be on the street when I call the agent and have coverage for that day so if they want to pay for insurance and pay a rental fee for wear and tear on a classic car I will be glad to drive it around the block for them other wise they can go #### themselves with what I pay in property taxes and the fact I have the nicest looking yard on the street well I am pissed. If I find out who called them I will park my 300sd with the bad rear main seal in front of there house till there is a nice oil slick.

I coudn't agree more. BTW, thanks for the prts. I just put a cooler on Sunday that I bought used. It aslo had a stripped fitting on it, but a person here gave a part # to actually buy the fitting and he posted the tap size and bit size to do it also. Let me know if you need the post to maybe fix yours if you still have it.
Thanks Again
David

Well, it sounds like you've got the cam timing right now, but what about the injection pump timing?

It's probably the guy down the street who can't pay his mortgage....

Suburbs can be hell, you really need a garage.

I have a garage

I have a tiny two car HA garage but it is full of tools the laundry area and miscellaneous stuff. What I need is one neighbor to move there such busy bodies the lady got fired from her job at the city for copying confidential information about me and others and showing it around. In the end they will get there’s karma is an amazing thing.

well did not have much luck

Did not have much luck adjusting the IP timing the directions dont make sense. The bolts are a real pain to get at will by cheap wrench tomorrow and bend it. It is raining wich makes every thing a PITA hopefully it wont rain tomorrow, the instructions will make sense and things will go better. Any one give odds I have to take the IP off and alingh the marks should I just be starting from there?
thanks for the help and encouragement.

Man, I am having the same problem, well almost.

I have had mine (69 220 D) as my daily driver, but, I am in the Navy and had to go to sea for an extended period of time.

The problem I was having before I left was a car that idled crazy high. I did everything the book said to try to do, but nothing, I figure I narrowed it down to the IP. I rebuilt the injectors, adjusted the valves, made sure no air leaks, adjusted the IP both ways, but still nothing.

I was out to sea for a while, and I finally got a new IP, meanwhile it has sat for about 4 months. Finally got the new IP in, but nothing. I see you are saying that there are "marks" to align the IP. I thought that the IP was driven by the splined piece that connected it to the crank, and that there was no real set way to put that on. Am I incorrect what I am thinking?

I am about at my witts ends now!

BTW, yes I did take a 13mm combination wrench, heated it and bent it to get that one nut on the bottom of the IP!

As I understand it

AS I understand it you’re supposed to rotate pump shaft until tooth gap on driver and marking on injection are in alignment. This is on the gear the coupler goes over I am in unfamiliar territory here but I know I have read some post's where people have put there IP 180 degrees out of time. Any one that actually knows what the hell there talking about please chime in I am just reading the manual and am unclear just what it means or how it effects the operation of the overall timing of the engine.

Think I got it

Ok, think I know what went wrong.............

I took mine out to replace it with a new one, lets say it was at 10 degrees BTDC IP timing. I replaced it with the new one that was at 15 degrees ATDC IP timing, so now my pump is at the wrong timing, I will have it get it set to the right spot for it to work, so I just have to get it turned to the right timing for #1, then remove it, then set the crank at the correct position.

Think that is what I need to do right??????????

mattdave, sounds like you're making progress. Now you need to make a drip tube. Looks like an upside-down letter 'J', and replaces the first injector line. Straight up from the pump for a couple inches, and the open end into a small can. Cut the open end at a 45deg slant (important). Now pull the valve cover and glow plugs. Rotate the engine by hand. From the drip tube there should be nothing, a few drips, a steady stream, a few drips, then nothing again. The rockers will tell you if you're 180 out (probably not). Don't have the books handy but my feeble mind says steady-stream to drip at 24deg. psFred needs to chime in here. Rotate the pump, lock a bolt or two, rotate the engine to check. Don't sweat the marks - drip tube is tried and true - and the engine will forgive you if you're a bit off. Last thing to do before starting up is new crush washers for the glow plugs, new fuel filters and good fuel, fully primed, and check the air passages in and out of the engine. A critter's new condo can choke things up. You can reuse the valve cover gasket - remember to spank the cover before the last tightening (seats the gasket).

Sometimes you've got to fire up the bbq and invite the neighbors over. Tell the kids to bring their bikes for a tune-up and set up a bike wash and wax for them to keep busy while you're cooking. Got a lot of free food that way when I was in the Navy and doing the parking lot wonders, and the kids (and parents) watched the place like a hawk when I was gone.
