Bonus question:
What was the reason for naming the company: Standard Oil?

Production of lighting oil (kerosene) did not conform to any reglations and sometimes, while lighting a lantern, poor unfortunate souls found out the hard way that their latest tin of 'light oil' was comprised of a large measure of benzine as opposed to the heavier distillates

Rockyfeller's solution was to 'standardize' lighting oil. Thus the name we all know: Standard Oil.

A few months ago I saw diesel for sale at a local marina (before it was blown away recently by Ivan) at only $1.25! Would this be suitable for consumption by diesel automobiles?

It's dyed (untaxed) fuel; it is unlawful to use untaxed fuel in motor vehicles.

Diesel fuel-marine is different than the run of the mill civilian marina (sailboat) fuel. Very close to kerosine. Marina fuel is closer to water on the fuel scale, in my opinion, because of the maintenance practices.

Listen to R Leo: if it travels the public roadways then you should do your civic duty and pay at least the road use tax. And fuel tax, depending on the fuel. At the pump it's all rolled into the price you see on the sign. Unless, of course, you really want to go back to the dirt roads in your travels. Those taxes pay for the roads. End of tantrum.
