Whunter, Mplafleur, and Rg2028? came over today, all the way from michigan. We had a good time, straightened out my vacuum lines, then we ate, after that, we got the car running, which was hard, the starter is starting to die slowly. Next we got the IP timed the best it could be. It is really hard to get that back bolt, we had to remove both oil cooler line connections at the oil filter housing just to loosen it. This all took a while. After getting the engine timed, (thanks to MP's 'diesel' timing light) we tryed to move the car again. It was doing the same thing, so we started pushing on the car while it was trying to move, this worked to get the car out of the rut it was sitting in. After getting the car back on level ground, we moved the car forward and back, to insure that the tranny is fine. Which it is. We concluded, (due to the smoke screen, and the lack of power) that the valves must be way out of whack, I will be purchasing a Valve Adjustment Wrench set (3 piece) , they gave me a quick rundown of what to do. Seems easy enough. Luckily the tranny is perfectly fine. I sure hope when i get the valves adjusted that it doesnt smoke as much, and the Idle speed increases. I will go out and buy a crows foot wrench set also, to adjust the idle speed if need be. It would not idle after we timed it, and the RPM's when we let off the throttle went below 500 . So basically, I need to adjust the valves, and if need be, the idle speed. I will post pics soon of our gtg.
THis is where I mentioned that they had been here.

Well Andy I just got my replacement IP in my car and have it ready to time.........

Man I got a lot of repect for you doing the IP 10 or more times......I would be tempted to torch the car after the third.

You got a lot of patience......that will take you far.

I have never sucessfully started it (Unless it was warm) with just the glow plugs. Every time it has started cold, It was with a shot of ether (with Glow Plugs disconnected.) So, YES it is a major PAIN to start. I am just glad I have you all to tell me the right thing to do, because without that, I would still be cranking the car over. Thanks again to all of you! BTW, I ordered the Valve adjustment wrenches, $75 , Not soooo bad. THey should be here today or tomorrow.

BULLWINKLE : If you ever need to use wrenches, Just PM me.

We timed the IP while there, just get the valves adjusted properly as they are easy to do and troubleshoot from there.

Thumbs up Step by step, it is getting better.

Hello mespe
I have spent over ten hours on the phone + one road trip to work on Sady and meet Andy.

The timing chain (Valve timing) is good.
The injection pump timing is correct.
The injector output is fine for further diagnosis.
There is no choice, compression loss due to bad valve lash is too severe, risk is slight, he is aware and cautious = one second shot is maximum used. RE: Don't start the car with ether, it's not meant for diesels and you could blow up the engine.
The injection pump is not new, it came with the car.
The injectors are not clogged, though they may be leaking a small amount.
The turbo spins free; but has massive end play, to be addressed later.
The exhaust is NOT restricted.
Cylinders #1, #2, #3 and #5 valves are being held open by bad valve adjustment = no or very low compression = no or little combustion = no power = giant unburned diesel smoke cloud.
Currently the engine generates just enough power to run under very light load = very slow crawl of 1 -2 MPH on level ground.

After the valves are adjusted; Andy will run diesel purge through the engine fuel system.

Remember my offer to use the compression tester, Andy(and I put in a brand new schrader core)-it has the glow plug adapter-but, adjust your valves first and see if there is any improvement(and check your timing chain wear while the valve cover is off). Good luck, Mark

Doesn't Andy have another IP around? I thought he did. If the valve adjustment doesn't help much maybe it is time to get the IP checked.

Ok, We deffinatly know that the valves are way way way out of whack, even if they were not for you.

I dont have an extra IP

I do feel and hear the fuel woosh through the lines.

And there is DEFINITELY is NOT a lean condition. We have a RICH condition. (We are overfueling.)

I was going to check spray pattern on my grandfathers manual injector tester, but last time I was there, we could not find the correct fitting to fit my injectors.

Im not sure how much the diesel shop near me would charge for pop/spray testing my injectors. I do know that an IP test would be $150-200 they said they would have to put it on a stand to test it. Didnt sound like fun to me.

There is still a chance I will receive the wrenches today, seeing how the mail has not arrived yet.

Sorry, Its been a while, UPDATE

Got the valve adjustment done!!

I have no idea what people are complaining about, that was one of the simplest things I have done to my car yet.. didnt take long with the right tools.

Ok, after the valve adjustment was done, the car produced half as much smoke, and gained twice the power. Although, the car still does not have enough power to get up a 5* hill.

After doing the valve adjustment, I tore off the manifolds I will be replacing a whole bunch of seals (ie. Manifold gasket, turbo downtube O-ring)

I will need to get the intake manifold boiled out at a local radiator shop, anyway know the price range on that?? (The intake manifold had up to 1/8" black gunk accumulated in some places.)

While doing all of this, We have noticed a great deal of slop in the turbo end shaft . About 2-3mm. Does anyone have a used turbo That would fit with minimal play??? Or better yet a turbo rebuild kit ??

Also, we think that the ALDA pin might be sticking, would anyone happen to have a used ALDA lying around?

I will try to pull off all the little bits and bolts from the intake manifold and get it into the shop as quickly as possible.

Thanks,

Andy
