tools for barter (wine)

Gentlemen: I recently bought a 124 & plan to rebuild the entire suspension and the head. As all of you know I'll need a number of specialized tools. Some can be rented others can only be bought but either way it's going to cost me a fair chunk of change, which is contrary to being a DIYer. Most of you own these tools in some form or another & knew that you'd only use it once or twice before you bought it but you bought it any way. Your predictions were right & you now have any entra tool box just to hold their strange shapes not to mention an investment that's come & gone. Well here I am at the same crossroads as you once faced but would like to make a different choice that benefits us all.

What I propose is that we enter into some form of tasteful barter. I'd be more than happy to ship a few bottles of good wine to various members in exchange for tools. If you live in the Bay Area, I can bring you fresh salmon or tuna. When I'm done I'll send them back & I'm happy to cover shipping cost on both ends.

Think of it as a tool dividend and let's face it, if we all lived in the same neighborhood (whoa - I just had a flash in my head of a neighborhood full of Benzs) we would be doing this any way. The fact is we do live in the same neighborhood, it's just ours is virtual.

I'm currently in need of tools (spring compressor, ball joint press, etc) to rebuild the front suspension on my 87 300TD.

Robert

mattdave, does the tester go into the injector holes or GP holes?

Thanks
David

I don't know about his specific tester... but it is legit to plumb it up to either of those holes... the manual has a picture of using the GP hole....

If I were to use the GP holes than there'd be a lot of work involved. The intake and all the fuel pipes would have to be replaced. However with the injector holes it wouldn't be bad at all since they're right at the top of the head next to the valve cover.

Thanks
David

Lots of people change out the GP's without taking the fuel pipes off...
and you will have to take them off using the injector holes obviously... plus have the hassle of making sure you get it all sealed up correctly when finished... which probably means a new crush washer in each hole....
Just WAY easier to use the GP holes....

Edit: this applies to 616 and 617 engines....

leathermang, I think your speaking about a 617. If I were to do it it would be on my SDL. Sorry for the miscommunication.

Thanks

The tester I have that I am willing to loan out only has the fitting for the injector hole.

Matt, how much would you want to rent it out for a week or two? Also, is it very heavy? If it goes in the injector holes of a 617 then it will fit a 603.

Thanks
David

none

I am punchy tired it has been a very long day but I will try to answer your questions. It weighs 1LB 8 ounces out of the box. It has an adapter for testing through the glow plug hole. I have not checked if it is the right threads for an MBZ but it looks like it is. I believe it fits both engines. Rental rate is you pay for shipping USPS priority mail with delivery confirmation. Rental time limit 2 weeks after two weeks rental fee is $25 per day. If you brake or loose a part you pay to replace that part, except the adapter that goes in the injector hole if you break or loose that your stuck paying for the gauge. You get to keep the gauge and test through the glow plugs. We reserve the right to refuse to lend it to any won for whatever reason we also have a very nice leak down tester that would require a large security deposit and a small rental charge

Here's one I hate to ask for but ... does anyone have the two-pointed "u-shaped" tool used to remove the ignition cylinder in a 124?

I've tried for a month, in vain, to fashion a tool with my limited supplies and even more limited engineering ability. Really need to swap out the tumbler.

Anyone have this little thing, or a homemade version that worked, that could lend to me?
