1996 E300 diesel general questions

I was wondering what the general impression of the e300 mb is? I have read some troubling things about the latter generation mb but not much about the 1996 mb e300d specifically.

The W210's are nice cars, do a search their is a lot of info on these. I like working on them, they are built to be fixed. Like any Merc look for service history, if their is none walk. Have you driven it? The later turbo models are faster and their is more room under the hood.

crmont,

The w210s are great cars...one thing to definatly check is the front spring perches. They were prone to fail on the earlier w210s...and by failing i mean dumping the whole front suspension. Just look around the seems of the spring perch to see if you can see a hairline crack or rust line. Mercedes hasnt issued a call back but will pay 50%. Also, it seems that mercedes cheapened on the rust proofing, so be aware of that as well.

If I were you I would consider a '97 instead of the '96 E300D. The '97 has the electronically controlled 5-speed auto vs. the 4-speed in the '96. Due to it's revised gearing and electronic control it's only slightly faster (12.3 vs.12.1 sec 0-60 ) but feels much faster then the '96 or so I've read (I have not driven either car). Also for '97 xenon headlamps became available on the E300 and a auto-dimming drivers door mirror was standard among other small changes. Does the '96 have full service records, what color is it, options?? Just curious.

Here are some links to check out:

The car is on ebay.

I did some digging and found that the car spent most of it's life in ohio. It was operated as a fleet vehicle at a dealership. It was then put on lease in 2001. It then showed up in St. Louis missouri at another dealership. Then it was sold to the lot who is selling the car now. I have decided not to purchace the car becouse of the info posted here about the spring perch issue. They salt in ohio so you know those perches are gone. The car is probably on jackstands. :p

Spring perch's are not that big of a deal, just keep an eye on it. W210's are nice cars.

Spring perches aside, did anybody else notice the cheap non-OE exhaust pipe sticking out the back? It always bugs me seeing things like that on a Mercedes.

Ok, I thought spring perch (or the lack of) would be a big deal.

Is the spring perch in question on top of the spring or underneath it? Isn't the perch part of the unibody? It seems like this car would be a candidate for spring perch failure. I have contacted the dealer who serviced the car for the last 8 years. They have not addressed any such failure on this car. The person who we talked to did say that ohio is extremely tough on cars due to the salt. The e300 perch issue and salt... just rubbing me the wrong way.

Red face spring Perch

The spring perch the causes the problen is the upper one. It is welded to the frame. Mercedes repaired mine(free of charge) out of warrenty. I thought it was only a problen on the 98s and 99s.

The '96-'99 E300 diesel & turbodiesel used the same W210 chassis.

Here are some links on the issue

The E300 on e-Bay is certainly a candidate for this problem especially since the exhaust system has been replaced already.

For 17K I think that you could find a better example. Perhaps you should try and find one that has not been exposed to salt during it's life (it seems that by looking at peoples location that have had this problem with there W210, that they are all in northern states where they salt the roads in the winter). Have you tried looking on AutoTrader?
