center console/rear seat vent blows cold air

Why does cold air blow out of my center console vent into the back seat when the heat is on? Fan speed does affect the flow of air coming out of rear seat vent. But if climate control is off, the rear vent still blows cold air. I am guessing outside air is coming into this vent somehow. When I close it, it changes the air flow (sounds different) coming from the dash. I have just been leaving it closed, but my two year old sits in rear seat and would like some heat in the morning. Thanks. Will - Nashville NC

I believe that the center vents only supply unheated air, at least that's what my owners manual states. Rear heat comes from ducts under the front seats.

If your center vents/rear vent always supply air I would suspect that a flap somewhere in the center console is not working, either because the actuator has become disconnected from the solenoid or the vacuum solenoid no longer works.

Either you'll need to fix the problem in the bowels of the system, or make use of the convenient slider control to just shut the vent off. I know which I'd pick

Correct. The rear center vent only supplies fresh air. Simply close the vent using the slider during winter months. The rear heat comes out from under the front seats.

Slider control is right under the vent...moves side to side...looks like a domestic heater control slider
Mine, if I have the defrost on...or ANYTHING....I get cold air out the back vent...if the compressor is running I get ice cold air out of the back heh.
I wasn't sure if something is wrong with this? should it still blow air out that back vent if the heat is on and none of the other dash vents output air
Also never get warm air down by my feet...and sometimes cold on the passenger side.
I think I may have some bad parts in my dash..:-/

You have to remove the center console. Either the cable has loose from the slider, or was separated at the junction during some past repair, or the slider itself is broken and moving freely. When pulling the center console, the uninitiated will often just pull up hard not realizing there is a cable attached. That often breaks the clip & hole tab off the slider control.
