leaking hose
I noticed last night that there is a short braided fuel hose under the fuel tank of my 1983 300d that is starting to weep. As soon as the temperature outside warms a bit I would like to replace it. Does anyone know which of the many fuel hoses listed on fastlane is the correct one to order? Also, would this line be under pressure, and if so, what is the best procedure to follow in replacing it?

Is it the supply line or return line? Is there a threaded fitting on one end or clamps on both ends? In either case, the only pressure should be from the weight of the fuel in the tank. If it is the supply line, I would drain the tank and clean the strainer at the same time I replaced the hose. If it's the return line, get a helper to plug the nipple from the tank while you replace the hose.
In fact, if the hoses are original, I would replace them all on principle. |

hose has clamps
The hose has clamps on both ends. I hope it will hold for a while since it is very cold here at present. I have no way of knowing what is original on the car, but it seems likely that lots of parts are 21 years old. I replaced the thermostat two nights ago and it was so old that it seemed to be welded in place. I had to remove the housing and put it on a vise and then pry it out with a large screwdriver. I am amazed at how well the car runs at its advanced age. I just wish it would get a bit warmer outside so I can get back to work. I am using it as my daily driver, so...

Then it must be the return line. The braided hose is not easy to find. I just replaced mine with 7.5 mm i.d. rubber fuel hose. SAE 5/16 i.d. hose will work and is probably more readily available. I have some 7.5mm hose left. I could send you a piece if you need it. Most of the online parts dealers require you to buy a rather large quantity. No need for that.
