Due Diligence

1. Get the V.I.N. number
2. Call M.B. @ 1-800-222-0100 and ask for the information on the original
selling dealer and start from that end.
3. Find the last registration and "Walk the cat back" from that end.

Some used M.B.'s have been through MULTIPLE car auctions at various
locations to conceal DEALER Perfidy(s)

Lastly, look for any signs of storage in "Davey Jones Locker"

You can try, but...

That thing has been listed for months. I've called several times, never an answer and never a call back. I finally gave up. If you get of hold of him, let me know.

I just came across it and thought, It seemed underpriced, but not ridiculously so for a private party.
Sounds nice by the description:
"1987 MERCEDES BENZ 300D, Turbo Diesel AT, gray, cold ac, new tires & CD player, 120k mi, 2nd owner, no rust, excellent running cond, $3,950, 410-799-8384 COLUMBIA MD #30127"
If I was able to pursue it financially I would probably investigate it but it seems there may be something wrong if they are not responding to contacts. And no VIN# is listed in the ad.

Maryland Rust

In responce to a curious PM and comments here.

I can only attest to two things about Maryland rust. One; what I saw in that one trip I took to Maryland to get my Maxima , and two; others telling me to avoid the Maxima cause of the potential issues with the Maryland Rust. I bought it anyway for 500 bucks. (down from 800)

That being said.... some folk in salt country DONT DRIVE their nice car in the winter. They winterize it in storage and drive the Bronco. (based on facts). This may be the case with this car.

It's Baaack!

Check it out. It's back, and now for more money. What the hell gives?

http://www.autotrader.com/fyc/vdp.jsp?car_id=178524893&dealer_id=55986616&car_year=1987&make=MB&distance=0&lang=en&max_price=5000&model=300D&end_year=2006&min_price=1&certified=&address=80301&search_type=both&advanced=&start_year=1986&isp=y&cardist=1506

I've personally made it a rule not to deal with anyone who will not call/email me back or answer my questions. That rules out a ton of ebay deals right there.

I just don't understand how people expect to sell something acting like that. But maybe I'm not the type of person they are trying to sell too.

Certainly better than a rule to deal only with people who will not call/email you back.
