ASD, do you have it?

I am looking to buy a 2.5 turbo in the future. Due to the winters in MI, I would like to find one with ASD. Is this common on the 2.5 turbos? Is it problematic?

I usually use dedicated winter tires (4) during the cold months.

I think he means a traction control system such as ESP. The W210's have it and the late W126's have it. Along with all W140's. But I am not sure when the W124's started to get it.

According to my W124 owners bible, ASD (auto locking differential) was avail on diesel W124's from 91 and up. Its an electrohydraulic controlled rear diff. It automatically transfers power to the rear wheel with the most grip. It is active up to 19mph.

My '82 126 doesn't have any of that, and I am here in Grand Rapids, MI, I had to go to work the morning of the blizzard about 4 weeks ago, and I had no prob going up my street in 14" of snow, (a hill) then driving all the way to work at 50 mph on unplowed roads.... I have yet to get stuck......I suppose a locking differential would be helpful, but I've had no probs so far.......I use goodyear assurance tires, they are awesome.

At least there are two tracks from the rear axle and not just one!

Thumbs up

My 91 201 had no trouble going up a hill with snow on the road when wearing 4 Bridgestone Blizzaks. Modest acceleration too,

I have a 1985 W126 300SD with ABS and all season tires.
No problems getting around Michigan in winter, Detroit metro, Ann Arbor, Ypsilanti, Flint or Lansing.

So is this a common option? Is it problematic? Although the responses have been helpful, my questions have not been answered.

ASD was standard on the E300D and in later years the cars came equiped with a more sophisticated traction control. Problematic, no, I've never had a problem with it. It is nice to have when accelerating quickly (in first gear) on wet roads.

Interestingly if I floor the E300D on wet roads I get a little wheel spin during the 1st-2nd.

My old tires were so bad that if I kicked the pedal on a wet road one tire would spin right out also the car would slide if accelerating in a wet-road turn, they were reeeal bad. Futura. Don't buy them. I have tried reeeal hard to make the assurance tires lose grip on wet road, its pretty much impossible, or if you manage, its only for a brief instant, and makes no difference. Quite a difference....from no grip to undefeatable.

My SDL can break my summer tires lose! 225 wide sticky Yokos!

It just has to be raining ; I would turn and hold the trans say in 2nd gear with my foot to the floor. The rear end would do a nice slide and I could get some nice wheel spin. If I spun the car in a parking lot I could sit their spinning one of the rear wheels.(it was very wet out) You just have to get the turbo working and the tires will smoke. (water helps too or better yet snow! ) The little thin stock 205's I am running now, well I don't have the grip I used to.

My friends S600 will light up the 275 Dunlop SP9000's in the rear. Just floor with the traction control off, not water needed.

You have a friend with an S600?!? Has he ever let you drive it? I'd sure want to Then I'd feel like I wasn't going anywhere when I got back in the SD.....so maybe it'd be a good idea to avoid those.....
