Furthermore
My rabbit's manual says you are suppose to give it two minutes at accelerated idle before shutting it down. I have it for Bad weather plus it is turned up and it puts a smile on my face being able to blow black smoke. I know this is bad for the motor but hell i only paid $200 for the car. I look at it as a safety procedure for tailgaters in this tiny car.

Thats crazy man.
you have to allow all aluminum block to idle down also. the head develops more heat than the rest of the motor. |

What doesn't the MB bible say? If you don't know what it says, then you need to study it more.

My other car the 83 sd which I have had for 14 years has 283000 and I'm wondering if I should start letting it idle before I shut it off?
Original Turbo works fine. |

Aklim with any turbo charged engine you should let the turbo spool down before you shut it down. SOP in the marine world.

I prefer to feel the raw accelerative forces of the 603, and have a tendency to hit 8 - 12 PSI regularly. Cruising at 55 mph doesn't require much boost, but 70+ does.

I tend to agree with aklim here.. Our turbos aren't the most 'hardcore' turbos in the world, and they don't get that hot, and they spin down fast. By the time I've pulled into my parking space and taken off my seatbelt, I'm sure that things are just fine. I'm not aware of any suggestion (for the OM617) from MB about idling down. Now, you probably would not want to shut the engine down while going 70mph under max boost, but in the real world our slowing down, parking and stopping provide enough time to prevent problems.
But then again, this does sound a lot like an oil debate, no one has any numbers, and plenty of anecdotes regarding engines that are incredibly different from ours. If you want to idle down, thats fine, you aren't using that much fuel, and maybe it does help and my poor turbo is going to eject itself from the car next week. peace, sam

The only thing in the owner's manual relating to cooling down says that you should run the engine at elevated idle until the coolant temperature returns to normal. This only applies when the coolant temp is above normal, say 105°C+.
Coasting or light driving through neighborhoods is more than sufficient to cool the turbo. |
