Going to der Vaterland...

I'll be in Germany, Poland , Hungary and France in a couple of weeks.

In the unlikely event I have time to scout for MB parts, what are some good candidates to try to bring back? I can think of euro lights and a 5 speed transmission, but are there any other less obvious "nice to haves"?

When I was seriously into British cars a few years back, trips made to Blighty proved to be rewarding although the vast majority of things were available here for less.

Has anyone been to Germany and brought back parts? Does Germany have the equivalent of a McParts? What about junkyards- what are they called and are they worthwhile searching out? I will be limited as we will be travelling mostly by train.

Anyone have any thoughts or experiences?

Rick

When you go to France, look for some Euro lights, they have the proper LHD lenses, and the fogs are yellow, and personally, I think they look cool.

Petty much everything is availible on this side of the pond.

But a nice set of euro wipers, brackets, and motors would be nice.

What's special about France? I was hoping I could get these in Poland as I expect it will be cheaper and I'll probably have more time available.

The story is that my wife is Ukrainian and we'll be travelling there to meet up with her sister in Krakow. The girls haven't seen each other in 5 years and my daughter has never seen her aunt. I'll have a bit more time there and my wife will be distracted- what's "Take me to a good junkyard" in Polish?

The part number for the 300D manual flywheel has been posted here before. And you can order Euro parts from Fastlane. Just call and ask.

My dad is from germany and he says they have no "junkyards" like we do, primarily due to the waste of space and sore-thumb appearance......they just don't have stuff like that, also everyone drives a new car anyways, if your car isn't in tip top shape they'll not let you drive till it is.

The French Euro lights have yellow fog lenses, you only see them there to my knowledge, they look pretty unique, and they have the proper lenses for LHD cars, RHD cars have different Euro lenses. BTW- see if you can get some mudflaps, they're hard to find on this side of the pond.

Why don't you check on german(and others for that matter) eBay--they have a lot of sellers of MB parts on their auctions and eBay stores and you could email them in advance to find out if they have the parts you want and then set up something for the future. That way you not be losing your limited time. I do it all the time here in the US.

Find some nice wood trim pieces-they are light, don't take up much room or weigh much in your suitcase and you could ebay 'em here in the US for a nice piece of change, maybe even pay for plane tickets!

Good ideas guys-keep it up. Not so sure about the 300D flywheel although I could put it to use as I have all the rest of the manual conversion kit ready to go

Well I can't see needing one in the near future.....but those are hard to find......the 240D flywheels are easy to find.

I'm not yanking aperfectly good auto to put a stick in.........unless I come across a 5speed 240 d parts car for almost free.

Has anyone ever heard of an instance where a 240D flywheel didn't work on a 617?

Right side manual mirrors (for W115, W116, W123 and W126) are nice to have.

They fit and work.....problem is since they are balanced with the engine when its assembled its NOT going to be properly balanced to the 617 motor.

It does stress the main bearinga a bit more as a result but will anyone really notice it? Thats a good question. Fact is we may never know.
