Well I scored some new GPs for the 9 tonight, Champion brand... made by Federal Mogul. I've had great luck with their aftermarket fuel pumps from Carter and engine bearings in the past so when I saw these were made by them that made me feel a good deal better!
![]() I don't know who's been following what but, here was the original thread ---> No Start =-( The vehicle had been sitting for about 5 hours total at the completion of the install so it was fairly cool. After I flipped the key, the GP light came on INSTANTLY. ![]() Tomorrow I'll start it after it sits for 9 hours and give the full scoop. I'll be happy as a clam (for a nonoffensive analogy ![]() All for now. ![]()

Careful about non-bosch, I replaced the ones in my benz when I got it (less than 10 hours on the engine). It came with brand new autolites (really bad?) installed, new battery, new starter. It was super hard to start, checked the glow plugs, 4 bad.
4 bad out of 5...wow ![]() Good thing those have a warrenty. I went Bosch. Curious to see if mine were just crap ![]() |

I too heard Autolite were junk.
My Bosch took a dump on me (maybe 3K mi on them), they are apparently going to gimme some new ones but I'll prolly sell them and run these or NGK's in the future.

NGK Glow Plugs!? Whoa hitmanX. Are you sure? I would use them if they are available, based on experience with NGK spark plugs. Tell me where to find NGK Glow Plugs, please! I would not use a Champion ANYTHING - I have no faith in their crap.

Yes I'm positive, I checked the local parts store and they're special order... so surfed over to Sparkplugs.com and they're a tad spendy for the NGKs. I think they were like $20/ea.
Well I lost faith in Bosch, spent $75 and they took a dump on me in a few thousand miles. Can't get them warrantied locally either, have to send them in. Weak. Last time I go that route. ![]() So when I get the Bosch replaced, I'm gonna sell them and have them replaced with NGKs. Until then run the Champion plugs. FYI - car started up like a pro this morning after sitting all night! ![]()

Here's a clip from the page...
http://www.sparkplugs.com/more_info.asp?AAIA=1194049&pid=10049 Also, do ya guys recommend removing the IP lines to aid in R&R? I worked around it being a male contortionist again but, it seems like removing the spider would have made my life 3-5x easier ![]()

Just so you all know, in the Ford truck world, they are starting to use the word "Autolite" as a generic 'four letter word' replacement. Example, "What the autolite is this gummy autolite in my oil???" Thats how little they think of the name Autolite.
I got a practical demonstration of this the other day. I had replaced two glowplugs very shortly after buying my wagon, but because I was out of town, I just had to buy whatever I could find, which happened to be Autolite from Checker. I replaced the two plugs on the road, and merrily went on my way. But the other day, only 3 months after buying the Autolites, one of them died! I'm waiting for the other one to croak soon too. So Autolite bad. The other 3 in the car are Bosch, and have held up fine for a few thousand miles. I'm hoping they keep going, but you never know... Oh, and in regards to removal... I found that a 12mm deep socket and a 3/8" 'stubby' flex ratchet helped me get the plugs free. You could remove the IP lines if you want, but that sounds like a bigger pain in the butt. However, I do have pretty small hands. peace, sam

Thanks for the info! I made a note of the NGK GP's. They make excellent sparkplugs so if the glow pugs are anything like them then the quality should be tops, but at that price I think I'll stick with Berus at around $11 per.
Removing the fuel lines helps make way for big hands and sloppy tools, but don't overtighten the nuts or the flare fittings crack and you will have leaks. This is a job for contortionists and masochists either way.

I run NGK plugs in my gassers and have for the longest time, they're great plugs.
Pulling the IP lines looks like it'd take maybe 10-15min more and save probably a 1-1.5 hrs of my time. I had a difficult time getting my hands in a few of the places. No 4 was the biggest PITA and the No 5 nut to preheat wire was hardcore.

I got my bosch for 8 bucks a piece at Halsey Import here in Portland.
A fine toothed rachet wrench does the job nicely without having to remove the lines. I had no problems. The biggest beef is the nuts on the ends, but I have long thing fingers so it worked out alright. |

I only do one GP at a time so it doesn't take me very long. Only once in 35 years did two GP have to be replaced at once and that was after the first GP was bad for thousands of miles.
I loosen the nut and leave the wire attached to the GP until I remove the GP from the hole its in. Then I remove the nut after I can move the GP up to where I can get to the nut easily. Never lost a GP nut that way. Replacement is in reverse order. Put wire on the GP and put on the nut but don't tighten the nut. Install GP and tighten nut last. I have one question to Bosch: Why don't you supply a new 5 cent nut with a $12 GP? P E H Last edited by P.E.Haiges; 03-09-2005 at 04:30 PM. |

NGK available for 603 engine?
Since my engine is apart for the new head, I want to install new glow plugs now, and would like to install the best there is. NGK is what appears to be that product. I went to Sparkplug.com and they dont list them for the 1986-1987 603 diesel engine. Any help if finding a place that might have them IF they are available? Thanks

If they're not listed, I'd call to be 100%. No dice there?
