Just bought a 1992 300D! (first diesel)
I already bought the car so I suppose it's a little late for advice, but what do you think?
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=6330&item=4537358951&rd=1 Apparently the only thing that I may need to be tended to are some rotors as the dealer stated a bit of pulsation. I've done this one of my GTIs and it was pretty inexpensive and easy. Any reason to think otherwise with the 300D? Jason

Hi, welcome to the board. You have just become part of one of the best groups of people ever assembled over the Internet and an owner of one of the best cars ever built.
You will need to catch up the required maintenance on the car. Check the maintenance schedule. Run some searches here. Almost anything that you want to know has been posted. As you learn, ask questions to fill in the blanks. As you search note keywords and usernames to use in your searches. http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/search.php I think your car is a 124 body with a 602 engine, 2.5L 5cyl turbo engine. My first concern would be rust as the car has been driven on roads in New England. |

The 2.5 litre is a 5 cylinder. Definitely a 602.. I don't think that car was sold in North America with the 603 in the early 90s. In Europe this same car would have been called a 250D, but here it was called a 300D 2.5 Turbo. Anyway, that's just a bit of a (big) mistake on the eBay ad. Hopefully the car works out nicely for you. I have a 91 300D 2.5 and love it. Planning on doing the K1 spring kit soon (in the transmission) because apart from a slight 2nd-3rd shift flare under partial load the tranny shifts perfectly.

Welcome, I purchased my 92 300d from ebay last year. It was an intresting experiance that worked out in the end. The only issue was minor body repair which was a crappie job that didn't show well in the pictures. Anyway I hope you have as much luck with yours that I have had with mine. The forum helps a lot even if you don't do a lot of work yourself. It's nice that 92 was the first year of the R134a AC from the factory only the early production months had R12. I did a oil anlysis on mine after the first oil change to check for any issues that I couldn't see and to set a sampling baseline for future checks. Goodluck.

I owned a 92 300D for about 100K - up to 205K when I sold it a few years back. It was the best Mercedes I have ever owned. As mentioned above, if you have records do all the mainenence that is due. If you do not have any records - do every service possible. These cars will last forever if you keep up on the services.
It looks to me like the origional radiator is in there. If so, I would recommend you replace that as it will almost certainly go soon (brakes at upper neck without warning. Mine left me stranded on I-95 while my wife was in labor). While you are in there, replace the hoses, t-stat and trans lines. Also, it looks like the front end is sitting a little lower than the rear in a few pictures. If so, you will likely need new shocks. I highly recommend the Bilstein HD's. I put them on my 124 and loved it. Other easy DIY suspension work that yields great return would be: replacing rear links, replacing front and rear sway bar bushings and replacing the front tie rods. That combined with the HD's will really tighten up what is likely to be a pretty loose ride at 120K. Again, look at the records if you have them. Some good preventative maintenance at this age would include: inspecting and replacing the front belt, belt tensioner and shock. Your transmission cooler lines could be leaking too. Again, these are likely to be needed at this car's mileage. Put on the new plastic fan while you are in there. If see a plastic fan already (otherwise metal) - the tensioner was probably done already at a reputable shop. Well, I could probably go on forever. Post any questions you may have. I love these cars and did a lot of work on mine while I had it. I see the guy I sold it to frequently. He now has about 230K on it and has only had to do a few small jobs on it. I will help anywhere I can. Congratulations!!
