Ok I am going to try to do them monday, I thought about it again, and I don't like the thought of giving money to the stealership....I can do it myself... I am going to do this successfully....I am probably goint to have to get a set of new mount bolts for it though, I don't see the ones in there being reused....once I finally get that done, the rest of the cooler lines off, and the new ones in, then I just have to wait for my ebay'd oil cooler to come in, probably wednesday or thursday.....also I think my radiator is starting to die....there's coolant leaking around the top seam, so I'll probably be replacing that, the hoses, and tranny cooler hoses...in a near future project......

RE: Help with motor mounts/oil cooler project...not going too well

Just did mine and everything went well. Helps to live in a dry climate, no rust. One thought is to use a penetrating oil at least 1 hour before trying to remove them. I also used a very small screw driver to clean out the hex bolt before trying to use an allen on them. The one on the driver side, the inner bolt was the most difficult. Used an allen wrench, bolt came off easy.

I also have a small hydraulic jack handle that is hollow in the middle that I use as a small breaker bar when using the allen wrenches. Small enough to fit in the area under the motor mount. The mounts on the passenger side only took about 20 minutes. Very easy. Remember to remove the center bolt first, then lift the engine and remove the other 6mm bolts, this give you more work area.

Thanks!! Those are some good tips! I have a 6mm hex socket 3/8 drive and a small 3/8 drive ratchet...but I don't think it will fit in the inner area, I'll probably have to use the allen wrenches...shouldn't be too much of a problem...from the outer appearance of the bolt if I use the penetrant too much the whole thing may just dissolve and allow the mount to come out.....

I noticed on my upper (return) oil cooler hose prior to removal that it had a small groove cut in it from the ps belt, which is at LEAST 2-3" away when the engine is idling/off....so on some occassion or occassions that engine was really shifting around to be able to cut that groove!! Plus recently whenever I was slowing down around 18-15mph the whole car shuddered in the downshift.....not good...those mounts in there must be like glop.

I'd like to venture out there in my diesel at some point in the next few years as a road trip I was even plotting going to the grand canyon with my friend this summer......I will be going to washington DC though....that will be fun However, I'd hope that on those trips repairing the car wouldn't be part of the experience ......

Is this the mounts you are discussing?

looks different than this:

I would have put the images in, but I have no idea how...

I'm too tired to read the whole thread but if you completely broke your oil cooler, I can nab you one from Pick-N-Steal here next time I'm out there.

I did break half the cooler, the top came off perfectly, every single thread was flawless, but the bottom one looked terrible and all the threads crumbled, so I bid on a new one on ebay, should last me a good long decade or more, so I am fine with that, and it was way cheaper than retail.

Jimmy Joe....yeah those are the mounts I am talking about, both the ones in those two pictures are the same ones essentially, they might just be a little different depending on the car chassis model. One of those is painted silver for some reason too....mine are both completely black. Hopefully monday I'll be able to get them off......

Cool deal, well if it falls out lemme know. There's a bunch of SD's out here. I bet it'll be like $10 and whatever shipping is... like $8-14 or so.

Also, have ya rebuilt your oil cooler hoses or replaced them? My lower one leaks and I need to do something about it. I'm considering having the lower line rebuilt locally... vs spending $100+ for a new one.

Lets see, I'm usually in Phoenix once a year, my Aunt has a '76 450SLC I get talked into working on from time to time

My brother is in San Francisco, I'm out there every so often too.

I think I even replaced oil cooler hoses for $50 when a body shop broke off the entire fitting from the cooler on my friends car. They wouldn't pay for it. I had even told them to unbolt the lines and pull the entire cooler up out of the way.

If it's not do a search under me name for "oil cooler repair" and you should find the procedure for fixing the threads on the cooler. Let me know if you need anything else.

Thanks
David

Well I did an 8 hour long marathon of car work today I did the cooler lines and motor mounts, took forever, getting the cooler lines in was a Pain, motor mounts went ok.....now I am just waiting for my oil cooler that I got on ebay to come, its supposed to be here friday. Brand new, it will be gleaming I bought so many tools to do this project, sears loves me now. I also have all new brake lines installed from last tuesdays project, and all the brake fluid is fresh too....piece by piece I am replacing every last part I can't wait to get back to dieseling, with gas around here as high as 2.69 a gallon for premium, which is what our caravan lives off of, I've been averaging about 13-14mpg with it. Guzzled half a tank in 130 miles of driving (almost 11 gallons!!)

Good work! See you probably saved close to $1k by not having the dealer do this stuff.

Next up new radiator!
