Does anyone know how to open an Acrobat file?

Got a Mercedes Diesle repair manual on CD now I need to figure out how to open it. I put it in the CD player on the computer and the light blinks and it whizzes around but that's all. No box pops up on the computer or anything like that.

The seller says it needs an Acrobat reader to read it, I have Acrobat 5.0.

No further help from the seller, and the Acrobat site will tell you how to do all kinds of things I never heard of and will never want to do, but it doesn't tell you how to get the files off the disc. Neither does the help section on the Acrobat 5.0. Guess you are just sort of supposed to magically figure that out, then need lessons in how to move from page to page.

So if anyone can help it would be appreciated. The CD is the 86-91 Diesel Engine service manual sold on Ebay by just_play_ok.

Thumbs up Launch Acrobat

Double click or open your Acrobat icon. Then when Acrobat is up, go under file and select "open". Then find your CD drive, probrably D or E drive. Then select the file you wish to open. You are done!!!! Good luck. If this doesn't work let me know.

I'm no computer whiz, but I'll try to offer a couple suggestions. This is all assuming you have Windows ... if not, sorry, I'm clueless with Macs.

1) Open up "my computer" ... and double click on the CDROM drive ... usually that either runs the program and whatever program is necessary to launch it ... or it will open up a menu of files ... click on the file that looks like a "run" file (an .exe?). Sometimes CDs don't automatically start up, and need to be manually opened through the file manager.
2) Open up Acrobat Reader. Just find the program in "my computer" on the harddrive, or look for the logo in your startup menu. It should launch Acrobat. Once open, go to the top of the menu, and and select "file" and "open." Go to the disc drive, and open the repair program.
3) It's possible your Acrobat needs to be updated or is the old version (isn't there a 6.0? I get confused between this and photoshop ...). It's free, so I recommend just re-downloading Acrobat. It should replace the old one. This will ensure that you have the latest version of the program.

Hope something helps. I hate it when I buy a new CD and it won't run, esp. when I'm eager to use it!

Most of those CD's have to use a specific version of Adobe Acrobat Reader and not any other versions...So you must load the one that comes with the CD...

"Most of those CD's have to use a specific version of Adobe Acrobat Reader and not any other versions...So you must load the one that comes with the CD..."

The seller says the reader is ON the CD. Now how do I get it off?

"1) Open up "my computer" ... and double click on the CDROM drive ... usually that either runs the program and whatever program is necessary to launch it ... or it will open up a menu of files ... click on the file that looks like a "run" file (an .exe?). Sometimes CDs don't automatically start up, and need to be manually opened through the file manager."

Tried that. Closest I can get is an "Open with" box that lists a lot of junk I never heard of. Any time I tried one of those in the past, it not only didn't work it stuck to the file like a burr and prevented opening it with anything else. No thanks.

"2) Open up Acrobat Reader. Just find the program in "my computer" on the harddrive, or look for the logo in your startup menu. It should launch Acrobat. Once open, go to the top of the menu, and and select "file" and "open." "

Tried that. Didn't work. Nothing.

"Go to the disc drive, and open the repair program." Don't know what that means.

"3) It's possible your Acrobat needs to be updated or is the old version (isn't there a 6.0? I get confused between this and photoshop ...). It's free, so I recommend just re-downloading Acrobat. It should replace the old one. This will ensure that you have the latest version of the program."

They are up to 7 now. I have 5. Have had every version for the last 7 years, none of them worked worth a dam. Don't know why it should make a difference but will give it a try. See you later when it doesn't work."

"Double click or open your Acrobat icon. Then when Acrobat is up, go under file and select "open". Then find your CD drive, probrably D or E drive. Then select the file you wish to open. You are done!!!! Good luck. If this doesn't work let me know. "

Didn't work.

Open your Acrobat reader, then under "File" click on "Open".
When the box opens up, locate your CD, which, if you only have one hard drive and one CD/DVD/Burner, should be D: .
This won't force the computer to always open these files with Acrobat, in case they aren't. You are asking it to open them, not telling it, so to speak.
If these files aren't .PFD, then it won't open them. Can you tell us what kind they are? They may have something like "manual.PFD", or something similar.

I would find another computer and try the CD there. It should be running and you have tried the things most likely to make it run.

May be that the CD you got is defective.

You should be able to look at the contents of the CD with Windows Explorer or Acrobat so if no files are showing when you do that, that may be one indication that there is something wrong with the CD.

When in Acrobat, go to "file", "open" and at that point, any pdf files on the CD should be listed. You can also see all teh contents by pressing the down arrow at the bottom of the Acrobat window and selecting "view all files" while looking at the CD.

When in Explorer, just open it, click on your CD drive letter and the disk should be read by the computer and a list of the files on the CD should be visible. If not visible, there is probably something wrong with the CD.

That is a good question. My DVD player cannot read dual layer DVDs. So either my EPC or my WIS, can't remember which, had to have a different DVD reader. Maybe that is the problem with this guy.

Tried it. Didn't work. Tried this one at least a dozen times. Seller claims it's an Acrobat pdf file.

Open the D: drive (or whichever is the CD-ROM) through "My Computer" and see if any files are recognized by the computer. Post which files you see. If you can't see any files, you may have a corrupted disk!
