Florolite Refrigerant?

I'd like to get my AC working again here soon. My compressor is shot, all locked up. There's a sticker under the hood that says Florolite. Is this one of those "junk" refrigerants? If it is, what all should be done to get the system working again? I'd like to take it to a good local AC shop to get it back to R12. What should I have them do or make sure that they do?

Thanks!

Thanks Jim.

I just might get one as a spare for the 617. I've got no idea how old this system is. Those units are normally north of $300.

Don't assume the 300D uses the same one as the 300SD........I seem to remember some threads from about 6 months ago saying they are different compressors......

I think the W126 SD had gold plated A/C compressor with diamond bearings................

I haven't run across it, but is that all it says? It may just be a dye that's added to the system to add in finding leaks.

I'm almost positive that's what it is.
Shows up in UV light.

I think you guys are right. The sticker said something about detecting leaks, I just figured that was an additive they put in the refrigerant.
Thanks!

These compressors are nothing exotic. They're just Delco's like you find in GM cars.

McRoth,

Now would be an excellent time to reverse convert. Any time a compressor fails internally, you MUST THOROUGHLY flush ALL components of the system to get rid of the debris that is left over from the compressor failure. If you do not do this, you will destroy the new compressor.

All this flushing will get the oil out of the system and allow you to go back with mineral oil and R12. R12 is going down in price. It is in the neighborhood of $15 per pound now. The price of the refrigerant will be trivial compared to the overall job cost.

Good luck,

Larry, Thanks, that's good to know. I might not have done that otherwise. Guess I need to save some pennies & get working!
