New speed record for my 240D
I pull onto GA 400 S this morning and notice a faint outline ahead of me. It was the dim tail lights of a w123 way ahead of me. I wanted to catch up to see and be seen. Also wanted to be nice and wave. I had to get the 240D almost up to 80 to catch up with this guy. I didn't think my old car would go that fast. I usually drive it at 65.
Anyhow, I catch the other car a very nice looking dark blue 300D Turbo Diesel. I ride next to the car for a moment or two, driver never looked over. Oh well, no other point, guess I just rambling on this morning, still need to wake up.

Most MB drivers even the guys driving the old ones never notice you.
80 thats like my cars cruising speed.

Or newer car owners are embarassed when confronted with superior older models. Great fun parking next to them too.
But it's rare, very rare for 123 owners not to recognize one another. |

How fast does that dog go when you have the engine spooled up going down hill? I got my 85 300SD up to 86 on the ride to talladega on sunday. There is plenty of RPM's left but the car started to shake a little more than I would like much higher than that. Some drunk kid asked me why I drove the car. I didn't give him the long answer. The short answer is it is my hobby. The best part of going to a NASCAR race is watching the drunk people.

Funny how top end varies quite a little from car to car. Yours is automatic? Speedometer varience may be a factor as well I suppose. Have to wonder why he ignored you though. Perhaps just bad manners or an uptight person?

barry123400:
Mine is an automatic. Don't know why he didn't wave. Maybe he was half asleep in his commute. DieselJim: No big hills around I'd feel safe speeeding on. My primary drive takes me from 400 to 285 and back. No frills, just a bunch of bumper to bumper at 15 MPH. Hatterasguy: 80 is about as fast as the hampsters under the hood can get the old 240 going. The noise from under the hood starts to make me wonder if it's going to come apart.

80mph ?
Remeber, if some taxi driver in Greece (cant find the link) can make his 240D go for 2million miles(?), (and remember also those 500k ebay MB diesels then I have no problem runnning "high" rpms in my stick 240D
My wife says "It sounds like an airplane" =) =) I get lots of W123 owners here in cinti that dont wave- I stopped caring a month ago- now I flash my lights and wave at them anyway =) Of course, give up those 30mpg dreams if you flog a 240 like I do =) -John

well, I did get the 71 220D up to 76 and passed a truck. Have a GPS
a Magellen 315 with me and that'll give me an accurate mph. Get 33 mpg first tankful after purchase. Not bad at all for a $500 car.

I was at a light stop light today in my 300d turbo and a gentleman pulled up to the same light-2 lanes to my left-rolled his window down and told me that my diesel sounded "good". he was in a very nice 1984 300d turbo.
