Some research on abandoned cars in California

Did a little research this morning about abandoned vehicles on the DMV site:

Link about who is responsible: http://www.dmv.ca.gov/pubs/vctop/d11/vc22524.htm

pretty much what mattdave said, it's the last registered owner. I threw this out there half jokingly. I wouldn't abandon it unless there was NO other means to get rid of it, and if I did, you can bet there would not be anything on the vehicle that would allow them to identify it.

Taken from vehicle code:22005
A public agency that removes one of these vehicles or major parts must:
• Issue a 10-day notice of intention to abate and remove the vehicle or parts unless:
— The owner of the property and the vehicle owner sign a release authorizing
removal and waive further interest in the vehicle or part or

This must be what Mattdave used. btw, there aren't very any junkyards or scrapyards around here. That's why I don't believe that is an option.

I even thought about this crazy option: drive the car to pick n pull. They will give you up to $500 for vehicle. Then go and pull the parts I want, which should be much less than $500, and then turn around and sell them like I intended.

Thanks for all your input guys. I'm about ready to start pulling parts.

not much in tax

While it is true that the code enforcement lady that called the tow truck is paid with tax dollars the tow and every other cost is paid by pick-n-pull. that is where most of there cars come from. I cry for the tax dollars spent here where I pay over 3 grand a year in property tax plus over 8 percent in sales tax with this money they pass laws and codes such as the one that says if I change the transmission in my driveway I am eligible for a $250 a day fine from the city code enforcement. I say it was about time I got something back from the local government they don’t even bother to answer 911 calls.

I don't think it has been mentioned, but if you have time, don't forget to grab all the extraneous nuts and bolts you can. You can never have enough fasteners laying around. Better yet, if you have a kid, put them to work at that. First mechanic-related thing I can remember was when Dad gave me a little 1/4" drive socket set and a couple screwdrivers and told me to take every screw and little nut and bolt I could find out of an old 63 Mercury before it went to the crusher. Got a couple bee stings and some skinned knuckles, but it was a good indoctrination into working on cars for a five or six year old.
