Question Rod? bushing

Does any one have any advice, suggestions or hint on changing the brake rod/ guide rod, or what ever name is correct, front bushings? I'm talking about the end opposite the L- casting.
Thanks all

I used a vise and a piece of pipe when I did it on my old 300sd I could swear I've seen rubber welded to aluminun for the first time. They are hard to take out

If you are talking about the end of the guide rod that attaches to the lower control arm, you will need a spring compressor to change/repair it. Most, if not nearly all, on this forum will tell you to only use a MB coil spring compressor. Rusty at *************** and ************************ rent these. All of the others are either dangerous or wont work due to spring spacing, etc..

While you have the spring compressed, you might as well change the lower control arm bushings as they will have worn and need replacing also. From personal experience, everything else on the front suspension can be done without compressing the springs.

In looking at the attachment point I can't see why you would need to compress the spring. Can you explain why you need to do this? It looks like you would back off the tension on the brake support rod and then just remove the bolt passing through the end of the rod.

I do not think you need to remove the spring...
There are some great threads in the archives on this already.. with pictures....
I think Alan ( Capt Kirk ) did it just months ago...

Hey,
From pictures I've seen it looks like the brake carrier retaining rod bolt is underneath the lower spring support plate.
The bolt goes through the lower control arm and the guide rod. I don't see how it can be removed without removing the spring and the spring support plate.
But then again I haven't done this or searched the archives.

I have all the parts though to fix it, I'll just pass them on to the next owner, let them handle it.

But I replaced the front brake pads, rotors, and calipers while I was in there, stops like a champ now

Kinda like replacing the Ball Joints without removing the spring. You can but why would you want to?

I thought it could be done at first, also. However, the bolt is just long enough that it will not clear the spring plate sufficiently in order to remove the guide rod end. Been there tried it.

I have been looking in the archives on this and I find a lot about the bushing and support at the other end but not much about this. If you see a link please let me know.

This all started because I just changed the rod mount at the other end (on both sides of the car) and after about a week I started to hear a new noise when braking. The noise is kind of a low moan. I can also make the noise happen when the car is parked by pushing down on the drivers side front fender. I had some one do this will I held on to various parts of the suspension and I could feel a vibration coming from the brake control rod.
Thanks
