timing chain check how to

i've been reading threads all day(great fun) and many people refer to checking their chains but know one says how it is done(that i can find). can someone direct me to a thread with this explanation. its an 86 300sdl, it has 308k on it but runs well, i have no prior service records i will start my own. i got it on fathers day 05'. i dont have a vac gauge but i unhook some of the vac lines at idle and there seems to to no vac at all. all the lines should have fair vac at idle, right???
i helped change the vac pump on this car two years ago

You can do a quick check at times. Checking when adjusting valves is a perfect time. Line up the marks on the cam and cam tower. This is not considered a difinitive way of checking but will give you a very close idea of where you stand without having to break out the dial gauge.
