Sooooo, Home Depot says there's a 3M '80' and a 3M '90', but not a 3M '8090'.
Could I get a clarification on this product, please?
Thanks.

Nevermind. I Google'd it and there is a 3M 8090 Super Trim Adhesive. No one around here seems to carry it.

I got mine at the local O'Reily's... in a small town...
but usually you can find this sort of stuff at a Marine supply store... or Google for the local 3M rep...and ask them for a local store to get it from...

I finally got around to this project. As is inevitable with my 'do-it-yourself' attempts, I had a small mishap. Some of the 3m 8090 got on the paint. What's the best way to remove it safely? Thanks.

Just did my hood pad yesterday!

The way I did it was take the hood off, very easy with a helper, it's not heavy.
Remove the window washer tube, remove 4 bolts, which you can match up by the paint where the bolts were removed.
Flip the hood upside down on a table with blankets or towels to protect the paint on the hood.
I tried the air tool 90 deg. 3m white brissel pad to remove what was left of the old hood pad, (that was not on there when I bought the car). That worked somewhat, but as this was my first try at this I would use a razor blade paint scraper first. Then use the white pad to scuff up and clean the underside of the hood lightly. (mine was not oily).
I used a shop vaccum to clean up as I was scraping.
After you get the old stuff scraped off, use a damp rag to clean up the left overs.
Fit the NEW hood pad to the hood (NO glue) mark the new pad lightly with a paint marker in 4 places, front, rear, left and right sides on the hood seams.
Take the pad off.
Put the pad somewhere safe to spray it, and upside down.
I used masking tape and paper to protect what I did not want sprayed with the glue on the underside of the hood.
I sprayed the 3M 08090 19 oz. as the instuctions suggested, up, down, sideways, took 1 can, plus about 4 oz. of the 2 nd. can to do both the hood and pad. Probably 1 can would have been enough.
Ok, the help left, I had to put the pad on myself, I went for it, not bad at all, just line up the marks, front, rear. if you do not press on the pad you can reposition it. Once your marks are lined up, front, rear, start pushing from front to rear, then one side at a time, center to outer edge. Your paint marks should line up on the sides also.

If I left anything out, or not right, please fill in for me.

Edit: Napa had the 3M 08090

There's an easier way, and you don't need but half the can of adhesive.

Remove the remnants of the old pad and as much adhesive as possible (you will learn to hate Liquid Nails at this point!). I had to use a blunt paint scraper and a whole can of adhesive remover, and still didn't get it clean.

Spray on one last coat of remover and wipe clean, then fit the new pad with the hood all the way back (on pre W123 cars you have to live with the hood half open or remove). Get it where you want it, edges tucked under, etc, then take a broom and prop it in the center. Pull the top half of the pad down again, making sure the bottom stays put. Spray three LIGHT coats of adhesive (3M 8090 works best) on both hood and pad. You want just a complete coat, it will go on in "splatters" == this is fine so long as it's completely covered. The adhesive will sink into the pad, so don't think there isn't enough there. If it's sticky to the touch, it's fine.

Allow to dry until just tacky -- if you put the pad up sooner, it can fall off again before the adhesive dries properly. Install the pad from the center out using only very light pressure until you are certain it's where you want it, then rub firmly by hand.

Lift the bottom half and spray the adhesive, allow to dry, and press into place.

Easy.

Note that a coat of the 8090 will re-attach a fallen pad put in with the regular adhesive and it will stay up -- my brother's has been in place for over a year now!

Use the 3M

Go to Car Qwest and buy the 3M black adhesive in a tube. I did mine a year ago and it has not budged.

Make sure you have thouroughly cleaned any remnants of old pad and adhesive from hood with a good scraper or brush. I did mine with the shop vac nozzle and the vacuum on. It scraped it clean.

Squeze adhesive on back of pad with pad lying on engine.

Start on one side applying pad to hood and smooth out as you go towards the other side. Don't try to do the entire pad at once.

Absolute BEST STUFF!!!!!!!!!!

I did mine and it still sticks perfectly. What I did though was take the hood off and layed it on the grass. (3M High Strength Adhesive on Ebay) Search ebay since they have many auctions going on this stuff.

a cheap plastic drop cloth does wonders to keep the car clean and glue free.

when you are done toss it. Thats what I did with my W116. I will need to do this before fall on my W123 as that one is starting to fall...need to secure a replacement first.

Not only does the 3M 8090 work great but it's great to work with. Glue delivery in a nozzle is a difficult design problem (BTDT) but 3M sure got it right. When I did my hood pad, I put my hood up vertical, stood barefoot on frame members behind headlights, and just pointed and sprayed with pinpoint control. Wish every job was half as easy.

Be sure to pat the hood pad all over, every square inch.

This way the new pad won't get dirt and sometimes moisture under it that could cause it to start falling down over time.

Just use some rusty nails or sheet-metal screws. It'll also help keep bums off your hood.
