trip to the pipe bender

here abouts a pipe bender is a phrase for an independent muffler shop. car is an 83 240d. problem was the exhaust separated from the exhaust header. crawled underneath and started looking for a joint so that i could remove a small section of the exhaust and start the repair. well i could find none. one piece from the header to the tip of the muffler. so i jacked the bugger up. removed the rubber hangers and lowered the piece to the floor. all 10 to 12 feet of the thing. loaded it up in my little pickup. the muffler in the passanger compartment through the sliding rear window. before loading i did put the flange on the header section of the pipe. that was my problem. the 'flair' had worn away. at the pipe bender, we had a little difficulty. his shop was small and it was difficult to move this long thing around without knocking something off a shelf or getting caught on something. anyhow, after removing a quarter of an inch or so from the end of the pipe, the gentleman put a good flare on the pipe. this section i am almost certain was factory item. a lot of the rest was a replaced section here and there. another ride in the truck with the bugger both in and out of the truck i made it home. a few minutes later all was back together. i actually enjoyed this adventure. although, attaching the flange to the exhaust manifold requires patience and some degree of dexterity. boy, it be tight there behind the air filter assembly. almost priceless. total cost for the man's labour. $10.

good story

does your system have the original three springs under the bolts that attach the pipe to the manifold? if not that may be why it broke.

negative on the springs. do recall, vaguely, that some of the latter 240s did not have the springs.
