Rack Damper Pin
Hello,
This was discussed before, I found the thread last night, but not today... When replacing the rack dampner pin, do you adjust it with the engine running? When do you know its the "perfect" adjustment for the pin? I've read that its bad to tighten it up. |

Its best to try to adjust it with the engine running (nice and hot, do it after a freeway run) as this is when the most shaking generally takes place. You have to be brave to do this though as the oil filter housing is right behind that bolt and its HOT. I know this from experience....
![]() Tightening it in all the way won't damage anything but it will cause it to be very hard to start cold as well as having it stall a lot, especially if you do a high throttle run then coast, often it just putters out and you have to restart it...this occured on mine for quite a while till I figured out that the previous owner or mechanic had put it in allll the way nice and tight, after I fixed that and adjusted it properly my shaking and stalling was cured.

Yeah, you'll know if you've got it in too far because after you rev up the engine in N, the rpms will drop down to nothing and the engine will go really quiet and then pick back up to normal idle speed. You don't really want this to happen, so you've got to find the ideal location at just the point where it stops doing this. Just adjust it incrementally.
