Remote start on a MB diesel
Has anyone hooked a remote start system to a MB diesel? I just bought a keyless entry/remote start system at Circuit city for $49.99. At first I didn't care about the remote start but after thinging about it, it would be neat. While reading about the connections needed I started thinking about how you shut off one of these diesels. It is vacuum controled instead of electrical. Did a search on this site but found nothing about installing a system like this on diesels. Searched the manufacturs site and found nothing.
Any ideas?

I looked into this a month ago. They do make remote starters that are diesel capable, but the issue with using it on an old Mercedes is the vacuum system connected to the ignition switch. There does not seem any way to handle the vacuum system, without seriously compromising part of the system.

How about a solenoid to pull the stop lever? Wiring for momentary power to shut off the engine will take some thinking.
You could fit a secondary vacuum source to the shut-off valve. When the remote start controller pulls +12V from a closed when energized VSV the shut-off valve will do its job. You might need a check valve in the vacuum line to the key switch and one along the VSV line. Sixto 95 S420 87 300SDL |

i am not sure what the part is called or what the part number is...but when i was doing remote start in my 93 300D, Directed Electronics, the makers of my remote start system, told me that i needed an MB part, something like a vacuum change or vacuum switch over...i will take a look at my part later today and see if i can get the part #...
essentially, what it is is a small valve with 3 vacuum line connections and 2 electrical wire connections... u have to have a ground and signal line from the ignition control of the remote started send a signal when remote start is activated that controls this valve... the hose going to the shut off valve, the valve with the "STOP" lever on your engine, runs into this new part, a hose then runs from this part to the valve on the engine, the other connection of this new part stays open for dumping the vacuum... when the remote start engages, the signal is sent to the new part that opens/closes the vacuum and lifts the lever..not sure if it opens or closes it, but it does one of them...now that the lever is up, fuel will run into the engine and allow the car to start...when the remote start is shut off, it cuts the signal to that valve...if the key is in the ignition and on, the car will continue to run, as it should, if the key is not in, the engine will cut off, as it should... i have been running this part for over a year with no problems...however, now, my shut off valve is acting up, engine wont cut off when key is shut off...not sure if this part has anything to do with that...though i doubt it... like i mentioned, i will try to get a part # for u...i have attached a drawing of what the part looks like though... hope this helps... Thanks for the great ideas. I'll look in to the switch over valve or overboost valve and let you know what I come up with.

Just goto any pick-n-pull. Look for any mid-80's gasser and you should find 2-6 vacuum solenoids per car for engine emissions. They are really easy to setup, just wire/tube it to vent vacuum to the sol as if it were turning on the ignition of a gasser. If you hit the kill for the remote, the sol will return to neutral, sending vacuum to the shut-off.
Most come with a delay option, just make sure it does before you lay down the $$$. A remote start won't be much use on an OM617/603 in winter. You would have to let it idle for 2 hours before it gets to 60*c. To me, a remote door lock/unlock would be much more useful. It's been done before to a W123. I've even got the electronics, bracket, bent pushrod, and wiring. I just have never got around to installing it. ![]() |
