That looks like a knock-off tool. I am always leery about tools such as that.
Where in the SF Bay Area are you? I have rented out my MB spline socket tool to another Forum member, before the Shopforum Tool Rental Program was in effect.
I might need mine soon, I am going to need it when I reinstall the head but when finished I'd rent for $5 locally (drop by and pick up and return if possible or I will be in the Oakland area Thursday)
PM me if interested.

True, but for a socket that has a single purpose of 25 lbft or maybe a little more to loosen the delivery valve cover, it should be good enough if the splines fit.

Well, I replaced all 6 injectors with rebuilt Bosch units from France. I installed new heat shields and torqued everything down to about 60 ft-lbs and the car idles very nicely but I still have a slight "nailing" sound on one cylinder. I can't seem to locate it for the life of me... I don't remember this sound from before but I still think the delivery valves are ok because it idles very smooth and has LOTS of power! The nailing sound is definitely audible and lasts until about 1.5k RPM or so... I do have one steel line that is leaking at the top on injector #3 and maybe this can cause nailing... any thoughts? Please help. The car sure sounds better though!

Thanks.

Any thoughts? I have ordered a new #3 steel line but really wonder if this is causing the nailing I'm hearing now.... Please share your thoughts.

Thanks.

I'm afraid you'll have to live with it. As I stated previously, a leak in the fuel system will typically make the engine quieter. So I highly doubt your latest leak is causing the knocking. I suppose another thing you could try is to clean the prechambers, but removing them can be a lot of work and cleaning them isn't guaranteed to help. I wish I could help further, but I was never able to make my 87 300D completely stop knocking and I tried just about everything except the prechambers. Maybe if you could post a sound file of your engine idling people could tell you whether it sounds normal.

One more thing, did you try to isolate the knock to a single cylinder by cracking each injector line? You could try examining just that prechamber, or swapping injectors to see if the knock follows the injector.

Are all the injector line holders in good shape? It could be that injector lines are hitting each other causing noise and eventually leaking.

Almost all of the injector line clips are in place and most are new. I ordered everything from Phil and I swear this knocking noise was not there before the delivery valve seals were replaced. I had a horrible leak from #1 and this prompted me to replace all of them. Do you guys think I should re-check the torque on the IP or should I leave well enough alone since it idles nicely and has lots of power and minimal smoke while idling....

Would the prechambers cause the nailing right after the job was completed?

One more thought... after driving it a bit at highway speeds, it seems quieter but I can't tell if it's relative or not. THe car definitely isn't nailing as loud as the sound clips in other threads...

Ok.. I took the car to an indy today and had him re-check the delivery valve seals and pop test the rebuilt injectors. All of the injectors tested good. Crack pressure on them was 1900 PSI and he reported that the spray pattern was also good. He re-torqued all of the delivery valves on the IP and everything was perfect. For some reason, it is still nailing on #2.. that is definitely the nailing cylinder according to the mechanic. He pointed out that it nails (and pings) up until the turbo boost kicks in around 1500 rpm or so... I can sure hear some nailing and pinging as I'm driving around between 15-40 mph... What is going on? I can't believe how much frustration this car is giving me lately! Any thoughts on this one guys? I've ordered some Diesel Purge and I'm going to try that but I'm starting to run out of ideas. BTW, this car ran perfect before the delivery valve seal replacement!!! If everything is correct (I was extra careful) why does it continue to nail on #2? Also, does anyone believe it might get better over time?

Thanks for listening and any input!

If there is a sound that wasn't there before the deliver valves seals were replaced then maybe one of the delivery valves didn't go back together properly or some dirt got in during the process.

It's easy to isolate the noise. Loosen the injector lines one at a time until the noise goes away. When you find the culprit cylinder, swap that injector with another injector and see if the sound remains in that cylinder or follows the injector.

Sixto, I think I've determined that #2 is definitely the culprit here. If some dirt did get in during the process, how do I correct the problem? I made sure everything was clean and I'm wondering how to fix it properly... Any thoughts on Diesel Purge and whether it might help clean things out? Do you think the knock might go away with time or am I looking at an IP replacement in the future?

Ok.. just ran 2 cans of Diesel Purge through the system and it ran EXCELLENT on the purge! Very quiet and the nailing was gone! Unfortunately, when I switched back to diesel, the nailing was still there. Where do I go next? Should I re-do all of the delivery valves just in case something didn't "seal" right? The tightening sequence was done by the TDM.. to the letter and verified by an indy diesel shop here in town. Do you guys think I need a new IP?
