It did have a ticking noise sometimes in park and neutral. It would go away when you put it in gear. I checked it a while back with the stethoscope and decided it was coming from the bellhousing area. All of the fasteners were tight, so I decided to monitor it for a while and see if it was developing a crack in the flywheel.
I never checked the vacuum pump because there was no noise from the front of the motor. Shouldn't this one have the pump with the splined drive instead of the roller? I was thinking that the splined drive wasn't as prone to failure. I may go ahead and get a tag for the orange porsche. It needs to be driven and gets twenty something mpg. The fuel savings could pay for the tag and insurance if I have to drive much in the next few days. David |

It looks like the guide for the tensioner caused my problems (I think). It is broken at the pivot point. The guides have a lot of wear that was not evident when the timing chain was in place. Or maybe I didn't look close enough when I adjusted the valves this spring.
I've got good news! The leakdown test (yeah, it was the low tech method with a blow gun) show that it did NOT bend any valves. Tom, I didn't know for sure which style of vacuum pump was on this car until today (it has the splined drive, no roller to break). When you mentioned your problem, I developed a bad mental picture of what all could be damaged on the silver car. Thank you for accidentally prompting me to check the vacuum pump. It would be a shame to get it back together only to have it break another cam because I didn't look at something that I should have. I am in a much better state of mind today knowing that both cars will be back on the road soon. David |
