'80 300SD shut-off valve replacement

It really looks like I have to pull the oil filter housing out of there to get the new shut-off valve in. Do you think so and does anyone have a link to a discussion for removing the filter housing? It's probably simple, I really havent looked at how to pull it yet...

Don't have a 80 SD but did it on a 79 SD and it just took patience and a lot of twisting. I took the bolts out and then the square frame off. Then I was able to get the valve out and replaced. Don't forget to check to be sure the new valve "hooked up" by pulling out a little and feeling for resistance.

Thanks,
I spent a week reading posts here about the S-O valve. Sounds like if I tug on it and it catches I'm reasonable safe from blowing up the neighborhood.
I found some old threads too and it looks like I'll be pulling the oil filter housing. How many bolts hold it in?

There are 6 5.5mm bolts holding in the old filter housing, but also there is the oil cooler line connections. The oil feed for the turbo and the oil pressure line (for the guage) also need to be disconnected.

You may want to get another gasket for that too.

Be careful once you get it off, cover that hole ASAP. That hole allows filtered oil into the crankcase and if you were to get some just in there, you could very well seize you engine.

You may just try to pull the old one off with the oil filter housing in place.
