Hello all. I'm a new owner of a 1983 300D Turbo. This looks like a great list!
So, here is my first question for you all.
There is a whirring noise in the rear end that starts around 15 mph and increases to a loud hum at highway speeds, combined with a noticable vibration in the "seat of the pants". Thinking that it is a bearing in the rear diff, as it seems to be centered and is not affected by turning etc like a wheel bearing. So, from what I could find, there are not typical failuers in the Benz diffs. The odd thing is that the rear cover of the diff has a fresh blue painted square around a stamped mark in the rear cover, and, there is fresh silicone gasket under the cover. Someone has been in there recently.
Also, I am relatively sure that the sound comes from farther rear than the Drive shaft Universal..
Anyway, I think I will try to find another diff at the junk yard and swap it.

So, can someone tell me what model and years of Benz have a compatable rear diff?

82 - 83 -84 W123 300 anything..these have 3.07 gears..
the 85 300 series has 2.88 gears.

Avoid the 240D as it has much lower gears...or the earier non-turbo 300 series..and they also have lower gears.
