1984 300d turning the key off won't stop it.
I have owned this car for 10 days and am really enjoying it. Today I turned the key off and the engine continues. The stop lever under the hood stops it just fine. I am wondering what conditions would cause a diesel to do this. When this happens there is no vaccuum availible for the locking system. Other that that, all is well.

Vacuum
Good eye, the TD's and D's rely on a vacuum powered shutoff. Best thing to do is go through the visible plastic vac lines and rubber connections and look for leak points. Replace cracked rubber connections with new MB hoses or Y connectors. Electrial tape can serve as a quick fix until getting parts.
Sometimes it will be in the motor compartment, others in the door locks. If you do a fairly thorough search and can't find it, your dealer / service shop can do a check for where the problem is. Its a little embarrasing opening the hood to shut off a car but we all have done it time to time! Hope this helps, Steve S.

Me and another member of MBshop were looking at a 1983 300D that was for sale here locally. We went to check it out. When we first walked toward the car I noticed a nylon cord that was running out from under the passenger side hood and went in thru the passenger front window. This was the guy's shutoff for whenever he turned the ignition to off and the vehicle kept running. It was hooked to the shutdown lever on the valve cover. Funny!

It just won't die...
Stevo,
Start by checking out the 3 & 4 leg rubber 'spyders' on your vacuum lines underhood; this is where I most commonly see issues with the vacuum shutdown... these get cooked over time & are cheap & easy to replace. Bryan in NC |

If you want the easy fix, the brown vacuum lines at the firewall are for the fuel shutoff. unplug the others and plug the lines to find your leak. process of elimination. yellow is door locks, green is climate control, black is atmosphere, blue is seat locks (coupe), purple is headlamps (euros).
