1984 300d
I'm looking at this 1984 300D, not DT, but D. It's a Euro. It's a very good car, has all maintainance records, 2 year old paintjob, new tires, brakes, and is a cream puff. I'm used to the 300SD, and I'm surprised how peppy the non-turbo 5cyl can be. I'm having it checked out by my indy tommorow, and if I get it, I'll want to change the bumpers out to the big U.S. spec ones. I want them for safety, and because I personally prefer the look of a U.S. W123 than a Euro W123. About how much would I be looking at for a bumper conversion? And it has black inserts like on the 240D below the tail lights. If I were to get the chrome inserts, how much would they cost do you think? And is there anything I should look for when looking at Euro W123s? The only things that didnt work that I could find were the clock and antenna, minor stuff.

I think you should consider leaving the bumpers alone - stay with the Euro bumpers.
If you are talking about your personal safety in the car, the US bumpers are not much more in the way of protection. That is, the car frame and body are going to be what protects your body, not the bumpers. The idea behind the USA bumper specification is to absorb a 5-mph impact with minimal vehicle damage. It has little to do with protecting the passengers in a major crash. If you have a big crash, believe me, the USA bumpers vs. Euro bumpers are not going to be what saves you. It will be the crumple zones in the body. Ken300D

What sort of trans?
Does the Euro you're looking at have a manual trans or an automatic? My '84 Euro has a manual four-speed, which makes it remarkably lively for an ol' diesel.
Regarding the bumpers, suit yourself. As has already been posted, the bumpers were changed to meet the North American regs, adopted after the insurance company lobby convinced Congress that such regs were needed. Phil '84 Euro 300D '85 300D |

Well, thanks for your advice, I've decided that I'm going to pass this one after a visit to the indy, and saw that the transmission was in need of an overhaul. If the transmission was fine, I probably would have it parked next to the SD tonight. I've gotten word of a 300DT for sale for less, and I prefer the DT and the US bumpers. Thanks for the advice anyway though.
