Oil questions/conserns
Hello everybody. I recently changed my oil with a hengts filter, and valvoline dura blend oil (10w-40)... the upper part of the circle says API SERVICE SM, middle is SAE 10w-40, and the lower part is blank... I was just told to change that crap out because its not diesel rated... Help please? I've driven it a total of 100 miles with it in there, and theres nothing adverse going on... I also plan to drive <100 miles next week with my grandparents who are comming in from NV...
Should I change the oil to something else? If so, what would you reccemend (76 300d with the 617)... and can I leave that brand spanken new $8 filter in there? Thanks alot, I REALLY appreciate it ~Nate |

I know there will be others who disagree, but my opinion is any diesel-rated oil is better than any nondiesel-rated oil. The diesel rating implies it has additives to help it perform better in diesel engines (being better able to suspend soot, for example).
As to brand, do a search, everybody has a favorite. You probably won't do any damage running the oil that is in there for a while, but you may want to think about a reduced change interval for this change (say 1500 vs 3000 miles or something around there).

I was accually going to put it up for storge when the snow hits (month or two if luckey)... I only have my temps, and can only drive it after bugging the living crap out of my mom for the previous week. I'm exagerating, but the point is that it wont get driven more then 300 miles (mabey closer to half of that) before I change the oil again (spring of 06)
After that I'll have my lisance, and will be driving alot, but for now I'm stuck putting my hours on the paper... I allready have 35 out of a required 30...... Anyways would running it for just a total of 500 miles on this non diesel oil hurt anything? and If it would, could I just drain the old out, and put in some diesel rated oil (same filter)? thanks alot ~Nate |

It will be fine until next spring's oil change.

It will be fine until you change it again.
fyi oil should be changed in the fall if you plan on storing the car. You don't want old oil sitting in the pan, moisture could combind with comdustion by products and create acid, sludge ect.

oil type
On the oil container somewhere amidst the ratings/applicatiion numbers you should see "C" alone, or combined with another letter. Oils with the "C" indication are suitable for diesels.
