1987 300d purchase

I am going to check out a 1987 300d today. Seller says that the transmission slips. Is this a common problem to the 1987? I am hoping it is just a matter of cable adjustment. Will let you know what I find. Price is right as long as I don't need to replace the tranny.

Kickdown cable, modualtor, vacum leak or bad transmission. If you get the chance to test drive without the owner #1 look for vacum leaks, loose lines, slack in the kickdown (Bowden) Cable. Try and make a quick repair or adjustment to remedy. But....put it back to normal before your return car It makes negotiations easier

A slipping Tranny is not a good thing. It could have any number of causes, but assuming that the current owner has already checked the obvious ones (low fluid level, cable adjustment) it probably means the tranny has just gone past its "Best Before" date
After a certain mileage (200k+ is common) they are in the 'borrowed time' phase, although with gentle use and scrupulous maintenance, people have reported 300k & 400k + on their original Tranny's with no issues.

Rebuilt Tranny's are available from M-B and last time I checked the price wasn't outrageous (about $1,750 if I recall) for a factory reconditioned unit.

Good Luck

Mine is very picky about transmission fluid level. If it gets even a little low on the stick it slips when cold.

They told me that they had returned the car to the wholesaler they purchased it from bcz the transmission was shot. I never got to see the car to check it out. Might have been something simple. For the $2,500 asking price I was willing to take a risk. Very frustrating. So, the search continues...

Too bad, $2500 isn't a bad price if the body is good. A tranny wouldn't be too bad either, and you'd know it's good.
