I drove a '79 300d for about 4 months with that awful thud thud noise. I bought the car for the engine, so I didn't care to put anything into it. It never did break. It started doing it about 180 miles from home - on the interstate. I slowed down to about 55 and drove it the rest of the way. I did not drive it a lot more before I pulled the engine, probably only about 750 miles. It got to the point where it was constant, and developed a loud rythmic squeak, but never broke. -Andy

Our '83 developed a thud thud thud sound one day when my dad was coming back from a store, looked and looked and looked and tried to figure out what it was, when I just happened to notice a thick clump of tar stuck to his front drivers side tire, it was the evil road sealant stuff, probably a 1.5lb blob of it. Spent a half hour scraping it off with a flat head screwdriver, drove it again, all was perfect again.

It ended up that the tie rod end was hitting the wheel weight that was on the inside of the wheel. I had them put the weight on the outside and the sound went away.
