Is this my Voltage regulator acting up?
1982 300D.
Hi, guys. Recently I replaced my voltage regulator (boy, were those brushes worn down!). I've noticed over the last two days that the battery and brake disc lights come on and stay on when starting the car. A light tap of the accelorator makes them go off and stay off. Is this my new VR acting up? I did recently degrease the engine (due to citric acid spraying all over thanks to a loose hose clamp), so I wonder if maybe i corroded something in the VR. Thanks, Pete. |

Nope....no problem. If the RPM isn't high enough the alternator won't put out until you bump the throttle. Alternators take a lot more V to make some V whereas generators take very little. That is how it is supposed to work. What does your engine idle at? |

Cool.
I hadn't noticed this before, but maybe I just hadn't noticed it before. I'll check the idle when I get home. Thanks! Pete. |

voltage regulator
I had a problem where I had to increase the RPM's to 1700 before the light went out. Ran almost 2 yrs that way. Finally had the instrument cluster rebuilt and the problem was solved.

I noticed that on mine I only needed like a good 750 RPM to get it to kick on.
They did this brand new in the electric shop all the time. The diesels just idle so low when cold, etc. and don't immediately rev way up when you first start (unlike a gasser) them that the alternator needs a little kick to get them going. |

I replaced my voltage regulator but the alternator took a crap so i just bought a new one (it cost as must as a new regulator) and no problems since.
