Glad it got you back home, Brian
Well, the #22 head is a HUGE plus!
No oil burned on the trip MUCH better than before!
The immaculate interior also big ++
No issue over the rear end clacking, if its like the 124 cars the control arms need to be replaced YMMV. (I lived with more than a clack for many months - make that a CLUNK! Darned rubber should last longer than 18 years and 260K miles!)
I wonder why it sits low? is there anything in the trunk? A big sack of gold maybe? Weak springs possibly?

An ALDA tweak will probably peak up acceleration off the line so the boost comes on smoothly.
I'm sure we'll be hearing about this for the next several months.
Another Benz rescued from the junk yards!

Yup! That feeling of satisfaction is so nice that the car will live on in the hands of a competent owner.

BTW, the old turbo had radial play in the bearings of more than 1/4". The blades were damaged as well. I've got it here with me and will probably take it apart to see what's up with it.

How does a turbo become damaged to that extent?

At this point you can't hurt it any worse...with that much play all the damage has been done and its junk.

I'm guessing that the old trap ox did the damage. Supposedly the dealer replaced the trap and the turbo. But, clearly, somebody didn't do what they got paid to do. Why am I not surprised..........it's a dealer.

Good job Brian. Now fix that car very well and give it to me as a late Christmas gift. Don't worry, I won't mind the lateness. I'm a very understanding and reasonable person.

You can have it as a Christmas gift..........maybe a trade for the S350?

Here's what I will do: Brian's SDL will come to me as a gift not a trade and then I'll trade the S350 for Hatterasguy's SDL (wheels included please). Now that I can work with. Best Christmas ever!

That S350 will be getting worked on soon, that much I can tell you. I can no longer stand walking through my garage everyday and seeing it just sitting there. A Mercedes mechanic here in town wants me to sell it to him, but I think that I'm better of repairing it, driving it for a while and then selling it on eBay where that model seems to fetch some good prices. It will serve as my first usable W140. From it hopefully I can then move onto an S320 and then an S600.

Now, Don, that would imply that a W140 is twice as good as a W126..........and we all know that this is simply untrue.

So two W126's for a W140? Their not twice as good, maybe I can give you 1/2 of mine?

If you want an S600, S350D's seem to be worth more on ebay. You could probably do an even trade for like a 1999 S600!

Ah, makes sense. What turbo was on there and was did you replace it with?
