Cummins Swap

My question is inspired by another post, is it -possible- to swap a cummins engine and tranny into a 123? I understand suspension and I figure frame would have to be strengthened, but would it fit and be mountable? Even if the engine fit, could the tranny and rearend fit, or would you have to give the car a mild lift?

I find this topic fascinating for some reason. Does anyone know the weight difference between a 5cyl turbo diesel, and the cummins?

id like to see that man.. ive never seen a cummins up close but its probably bigger than the om 617 so you will probably have to mod the hood

isnt the cumins a v-8 turbo diesel? if it is id probably weigh more and the transmission is probably a little bigger

The Cummins is a long and very heavy engine. I don't think there is any possiblity of getting it physically into the W123. And, if you managed to do it, what transmission would you utilize? Space would be a problem here as well.

Then........if you managed to do it.........and opened the rack all the way........the torque would probably flip the car over.

the body flex man that w123 would look like a piece of wrought iron fence all twisted and decorative looking.. what if you get a w123 wagon and mid mound the engine behind you or next to you and have the tranny come to a foot before your new differential which can hold the torque and stuff..

if you ever do this youve got to put twin stacks on this so when she pulls off the line you lay some nice fog

the only feasible way

would be to shorten a dodge truck frame and just use the 123 body tosit on top of it all.

the cummins weighs at least twice the 617. also the tranny and rear end necessary to handle the torque would be commensurate.

Wow even the 3.9 liter 4cyl cummins weighs 370kg (815lbs )

However, it does produce 135hp @ 2500rpm & 500lb's of torque!

The highest powered 3.9 4cyl produces 169hp and 600lbs of torque at 2500rpm! That is some power!!!

You do realize that this is physically impossible?? The maximum torque, if actually 600 ft-lbs (which is doubtful) would produce 285 hp at 2500 rpm.

Now, if it produced 169 hp at 2500 rpm, this would equate to 355 ft.-lbs at 2500 rpm. It might be possible to generate 600 ft.-lbs. at a lower rpm, but this is doubtful. The torque doesn't normally drop off so dramatically between the torque and hp peaks as would be evidenced in a gasser.

I really plan to aatempt a big diesel engine swap, someday. When money is more common...

I've got a few engines in mind but two stand out the most to me:
Cummins 3.9L 4BT/ISB170 170HP and 400ftlbs TQ. (Form FexEx/Bread truck)
Isuzu 4BT 147hp and ??? torque. (From Isuzu NPR)

Anything is possible with enough money, time and some scrap metal.

At the Jeep show over this past summer in PA there were three CJ's with diesel conversions; my Nissan SD-33, some unknown make diesel w/intercooler, and a 4BT built by a Jeep shop for a customer.

The 4BT is a great motor... gobs of power, can be easily mated to a NV4500 (strong 5-speed transmission), and can be found in bread trucks from $1,500-$2,500.

The biggest problem I observed was the height of the damn thing. I think it is taller than it is long (from top of valve cover to bottom of oil pan)!! The Jeep had a 3" body lift to allow the hood to clear the engine, at the same time the oil pan was quite low.

If I had not found a ScoutII with the Nissan, I would have more strongly considered the 4BT, even though it is so tall.

BTW, my SD-33 weighs 672lbs.

EDIT: yup, check this out, it is 35" tall and 30" long.

You see the swap someone did with the 4BT into a early Willys wagon?
