Wow. I've never heard one sing that high before.

Is that actually 5700 rpm in second???.................on a 617???.............

I still think I can't believe it.............truly amazing!

And, it appeared to be pulling well over 5K.........where the torque should have fallen off dramatically.

Yep...2nd gear

It pulls okay but you can feel the torque drop...when it reaches 5700 it lets out a huge belch of smoke as long as you stay on it...defintely fueling!!

Had to unplug my tank vent...that thing seems to get plugged up often when I drive through lots of mud.

Its running pretty solid now...I need to bring the ALDA back up a little (I had adjusted it down to take care of some smoking but went too far).

I'll do 0-60 here after I get the ALDA all set up nice. I'll post on the other thread what the performance is THen I'll up the fuel some more and repost performance

Here's a video of my '84 300SD. Running cold. Dash thermometer said 12deg C.

Here's another video 1/2 hour later running hot.
video 2.avi

There is a little bit of exhaust smoke but I don't think it shows up.

video 3.avi
Blowby....good or bad ???

Do I hear some sort of knocking/hammering when cold? Sounded like there was something more there than just diesel clatter/cold engine.

I guess the warm video would show

Same question as Brandon

Brandon, I thought I heard the "some sort of knocking/hammering" also. I am curious because my 87 sounds the same way when cold. If I rev it up past 1000 RPM the knock goes away, and then comes back when I let off. Once warmed up from a little driving it is not there at all.

If the answer from dannym is yes, what could it be?

Mine runs great, burns no oil, has no blowby, and gets 26 -27 MPG on the highway. Any ideas?

Thanks,

Clay

I believe each of these cars are the final production year for that model.

Mine hammers when it is cold but its clearly upper head clatter...not bottom end clunk.

Maybe get under the car when its idling cold and have a good listen. Its something difficult to pinpoint. If it goes away at all RPM's when its warm I guess its nothing to worry about.

You know I never had anything to compare it too. After hearing some of the audio clips from this thread I am kind of relieved. I always thought it was too loud and knocked a lot.
It get's 25+ MPG but I'm sure it could use an injection pump timing. I may just wait and roll on a new chain this spring. It definitely sounds better when warm. I'll add that video tomorrow.

Nice video of your car....is that a manual?

Nope...it would be a chore to speed shift that engine without wasting the tranny at 5700RPM

Its an auto 4...like almost every w126 body

I was wondering about that. I thought I saw you shifting in your video.

I just posted a video running hot in my first post.

Well the transmission would want to shift at 4300RPM or whatever if I let it...so I was basically holding it into 2nd gear. (thus you saw me shifting out of 2 into S)
