Axle ticking?

Lovely mental image...

It ended up that I have the wrong tie rod end on the driver's side wheel, It's too long. I also may have a bent spindle, the car was in a front end accident before I owned it, and may have bent the spindle, so they put on a longer tie rod assembly to fit. When turning right the tie rod would hit the wheel weight that was on the inside of the wheel. I had the wheel weight put on the outside of the wheel for now, and will replace the tie rod assemblies when it warms up again.

I'd love to tear through that course with mine too!! Then again, I practically have already, just not all at once, MI roads are way worse than that "bump pattern" road they have, as our holes are deep enough for the car to hit the ground. Also, I've gone through standing water about 2x as deep as they did, about 3x as fast....

As for the offroading, snowy roads and dirt roads around here are the same as the track.....so I guess I have done most of it already, including the "Kalt wetter startup"

Cool video, thanks for posting it, Joe. Amazing that it's 30 years old!

Artic, good luck with the translating. It would be interesting to know what he is saying esp. around the 9:27 til about 9:49 timeframe.

I am not very good at german(yet), but it sounds like he might be talking about the maximum cruise speed and such, I'll ask my dad about it tomorrow....

Can anyone figure out that db (sound level) reading they measure on the autobahn? They have a close up of the meter.

I'd also be intrested in a translation, especially the max cruise speed.

He's holding the cruise speed around 150kph, which is about 92mph. The top speed is around 156kph according to the last dash on the speedometer. Looks like the cabin sound level is at 2dB on the highway. It makes me want to find an empty highway and run mine flat out like they are doing.

My German's not good enough to provide a real-deal translation, but I'm pretty sure he's commenting on the top speed and recommending that M-B should press on with the development of more powerful turbocharged diesels.

That's got to be the quietest 300D in the world, considering that noise level in a typical library is 30-40 dba! Realistically though, highway noise level in a 300D is probably 70-something dba.

The driver says, "72".

I'm trying to understand. How does it read 72? I can't get the picture of it up, but it clearly says 2. Is there some special way to read a decibel meter?

Possible that they put in the 70+ module and it starts reading at 70dB and then adds on whatever is displayed.

72 still is not bad at ALL...

Very true, my computer used to be well above that. (Several 9,000rpm fans )

Its now waaaaay quieter, I couldn't deal with it sounding like a jet anymore.

I love the sound of a 617 at 70+ mph....

OK who is going to find one on a 126? Very cool piece of history, especially if you have that year/model.
