Headlamp Wiper Retrofit

Hey all, Its been a while since I've posted here. Honestly, the ol' girl has been behaving. Now i'm starting to get into those little MB pet peeves of mine. I've always wanted the wipers on my headlamps. I got the Euros and made the car look 20 years newer, but the wipers were something that was still missing. As luck would have it, a friend of mine that owns a junk yard called me up the other day and told me he had a W126 in the lot to swing by and look to see if I needed anything off of it. When I got there I saw it was an 88 or 89 and had the wipers. I took off the whole system including the second washer pump off the tank.

My question (after this long and tedious intro) can I retrofit that system (us version) to my 300SD that never had the wiper system in the headlamps. If so, what do I need to do to make them operational? I have read all of the threads on headlamp wipers, but it seems that the questions are concerning people who already had the wiper system on their car not installing them in cars that never had them.

What I dont now is, how does the lamp wiper system know when to come on. (I know the lights have to be on, and the windshield washer activated for them to work). In other words, how do I wire the car to make them work. Has anyone ever done this?

Thanks!
Robert

Are these wipers the US spec version? If so, you're wasting your time retro fitting it on to Euro headlights. They don't wipe efficiently the Euro glass lens and the right headlight won't hold up securely with US spec wiper motor bracket. If you want wipers, find Euro spec wipers/motors with brackets.

Unless one lives in a very muddy area, I can find no point to the headlamp wipers.

There are 300+ million cars/trucks on the road right now that seem to be doing perfectly fine without headlight wipers.

EDIT: BTW, I don't think Wal-Mart sells 4" long wipers...

Snibble,

I agree that the best thing would be to have the Euro version of the wiper system, but since I dont have that right now, my best bet is to wire the car for now and use the US version until I come across a Euro version of the wiper system.

By the way I love the way your car looks....I hope to gain that look on mine.

That information was in the forum as I specifically remember the discussion on creating the bracket. I do fear it was lost in the October data melt down.

I think it must have, becasue I could not find it. But my problem is not so much the bracket....I can figure that one out. My fear is the electrical connections as I could not figure it out in the car the wirper system came from. I have the plugs, but I cut those (maybe that was a mistake). It just seemed I would have to disasseble the car to get to where the cables would bury themselves. I was able to trace only the drivers side, but it lead into the fuse box.

I also have a set that is intended for my SD but procrastination has kept that from happening. I had planned on using the SDL as my guide and going from there, hoping it was plug and play...maybe

I hope so too, but the longer I think about it....the more I think it is not. I havea feeling that these things are a bit more complicated because MB never intede for those cars to have the wiper systems. I was looking in my fuse box and I cant see where a relay would go for the system!
