Diesel PING

I have a 1989 Mercedes 190D non turbo,I live in Toronto,As the weather has gotten colder 0 degrees,My motor has started to PING on acelleration. The ping sounds like a when you run a high performance gas engine on really cheap gas,I think they call it detonation,Is this normal for a diesel? My car has 150,000 miles and has been well maintaned. The pingging sound continues when I am crusing but not as loud. The ping sound is much louder when the engine is cold.Other than the ping, the car runs great and no difference in fuel mileage. Can any one help?

some of this

is to be expected. perhaps the winter fuel is contributing to it. my diesel mechanic farmer brother friends tell me that if the pump is timed and mixture adjusted to optimum some stray rattling and pinging is expected.

I was getting some nasty ping at cruising speed after running WVO blend all summer, and then going back to pump Diesel. It wasn't something the car was doing in it's pre- WVO days, so I was pretty sure it must have been caused by fouled injector tips. I tried several brands of Diesel treatment, including the legendary Diesel Purge procedure- all of which seemed to bring temporary relief. Finally, I ran a full bottle of Kleen-Flo brand through half a tank- this seems to have fixed it permanantly, after several fill ups, we're still good.

I also read in a Chilton's manual that if the timing chain tensioner is worn out, it will result in pinging noises at cruising speed.

Diesel purge works!
Not "i hope it works"... This stuff works!
Fixes rough idle; ends pinging & makes engine run smoother.
(Valve adjustment is a critical factor also.)

whoever created diesel purge is worthy of an animal sacrifice.

Get some of the PowerService conditioner and add 12 oz. to 20 gallons. See if the ping goes away. Report back with findings.

Remove the injectors and have them bench tested, repair faulty ones.

I have never had any luck with those additives, I ran diesel purge through the SD and nothing really changed. Power Service seems to boost cetane and make the engine run smoother thats about it.
