Should only affect the 2-3 shift.

I have some flare going into 4th, but only under extreme load. If I'm just cruising, it's fine.

Probably due for a filter/fluid change, but don't expect that to fix the issue.

I have replaced my 3/2 valve levers but that didn't impact at all.

Any ideas?

Changing over to Mobil 1 Synthetic on my tranny made an overall significant improvement in how it shifts/runs. 6k into using it and I'll never go back, it especially does better in the extreme cold....mine used to flare pretty bad on 2-3 in the cold, now it doesn't at all. When warmed up my 2-3 is very firm, and when HOT (after an hour of freeway) it shifts like a rock, like the 1-2, except without such a big jolt.

I have a 1996 E300D with a 722.438 transmission. Will the kit work on it?

Regards,

Alex

You most likely have a vacuum leak or a defective vacuum control valve.

Get a vacuum gauge and hook it up to the line that goes to the transmission. It should read somewhere between 10" and 15" at idle. Then, when you drive it, the vacuum should drop steadily depending on how much pedal you have. At maximim power, the vacuum should be near 0" and the shifts will be correspondingly firm. But, at part throttle conditions, the function of the modulator is to soften the shifts, depending on the available vacuum.

A big thanks to RobtheMod! After reading his post, I installed a K1 while I was doing a fluid/filter change on Strider's transmission. With 415k on it, I assumed the trans was fading as the 2-3 shift was mushy, taking about 2 seconds to actually shift.

I put the K1 in last night and drove it 75 miles this morning. It truly worked! The 2-3 shift is exactly like the 1-2 shift now - firm and crisp. I had adjusted the modulator to make the shifting firmer to overcome the mushy 2-3 shift - now it looks like I can soften it up and make the 1-2 smoother.

It took about 15 minutes extra time - I highly recommend it if you have a 2-3 flare.

$15 bucks and only two days from Phil.

The funny part is that the part said it originally came from Virginia (OK first was Germany), a few miles from where I work. Then was shipped from Georgia. Long route to get to me.

Thumbs up

Does this cover ALL 722s like ours? Or was this included by MB after a certain model year?
