Roaring Noise

I have a roaring noise that I can not figure out where it is coming from sometimes it seems like it is in the front of the car and then sometimes it seems like it is in the middle of the car. There is a little vibration and I here it worse at about 50 MPH. Does anybody have any ideas. I have a new set of tires on it and this did not take care of the problem. Thanks for any help

Lots of things it can be. In the front, tires, wheel bearing. In the middle the drive shaft mount and center bearing. In the rear, the wheel bearings, rear diff.

Thanks for the info. Is there any easy way to isolate the problem.

Drive down the road and turn left or right. If the noise increases noticably in either turn, its probably a wheel bearing. Then check out the tires for any weird wear.

Then report back.

How about this noise?

More of a low frequency vibration than a noise. Really can't "hear" it, more of a feel.
At about a 1 hertz cycle I feel this when rolling at 70 mph or so. Seems like it might be coming from the rear but it's really hard to localize that low of a frequency.

Bearing, rear diff?

Take off the wheels and try tightening the bearings.

I agree with Kerry on the clutch. If the clutch is frozen and the fan is turning at full lockup speed, the sound is exactly like what you describe............a roar coming from the front of the vehicle.

Spin the fan, by hand, when cold. It should be relatively easy to turn but probably won't spin on it's own. If it's hard to turn.........that's your problem.

Hmm. I'm glad you mentioned that. I'm tracking down a similar sound and it reminded me that I tried to turn the fan the last time I was poking around with the engine cold and I was suprised at how hard it was to turn. I didn't think much of it but now I'm going to give it a closer look.
