I think it's a grey market car, I guess that follows. Thanks, again.

[QUOTE=alienman]I've just come upon a 78 240d with only 65k miles today.

If its a manual tranny, I would pay top doller for a nice 240D. If your only looking for a beater to just drive thats different. You can spend allot of time and $ making a nice car out of a beater. Look for rust, and you would proly have to do a few Italian tune ups to blow all the cardon out (up the pali (sp?) with you foot in it).

What are the road conditions like in Honolulu?? These low mileage diesels make it seem like 50 miles is maximum driving distance, and typical day's drive is about 12 miles back and forth.

If this is the case then I'd skip the diesel and go with gasoline engine instead.

Diesels suck when they're operated stone cold most of the time or just on 4 mile runs. Combustion chambers will foul with carbon and they will drive like POS.

The best environment for diesels is 100 mile round trip commute each and every day, open road stuff. Better yet 500+ mile cross country runs are where the diesel engine performs at its best.

Are you sure you want a diesel for Hawaii islands?? Hell, if it was me I'd buy a motorcycle.

I purchased a '82 240D last weekend (automatic) and it reminded me that these cars are, in my opinion, one of the most fun cars to tool around town in. I have driven it off and on for about three or four days and the fuel gauge has hardly moved. No rust and it seems to have been very well maintained.

i dont agree with dog on this one.

in europe they use nothing but diesel taxis and they are 100% short distance. of course they never shut them off either. but probably the economics for an individual might make the gas a reasonable alternative.

Unfortunately, I was unable to check the car out this past weekend because the owner's husband drove the car to the airport and parked it there. He will be away until Saturday, so I'll try to take a look this coming weekend.

The commutes here are pretty short, but it almost always takes over an hour just to drive 7 miles on the highway during traffic hour. Ridiculous! I'm currently spending about $150/month for gas on my 300se (about 300 miles/tank with a/c on) and figure that if I could cut that down to around $100 or so driving the 240d daily, it would be good for the wallet. Oh, and H3 (highway 3) is better than the Pali for blowing out carbon - nice uphill grade and views

well if you are

going to be stuck in traffic, idling a diesel takes almost no fuel at all, so that is a plus for diesels.
