Scanners - how much detail do I need?
I have a W210, 1999 E300DT. I plan on keeping it at least 10 or 20 years.
Seems like these newer MB's are more prone to "CEL's" & throwing other "Codes". Can't always presume I will be near an AutoZone that is open to read the codes etc. Plus my local one refuses to clear codes. Various scanners out there for diagnostics etc. Don't mind spending some money, but don't want to throw it away either. Getting another computer set up to run the WIS system, sometime, for the in-depth stuff. But if out on the road etc. would like to know right then if the code is important or not and have ability to clear it. So, what to get? Base Scanner - reads & clears just the code only. No explanation. Say $75 Basic - as above with the verbage as to the code. Say $175 Upscale - as above Say $275 and does "Recording and playback of real time data lets you diagnose during a road test for easier diagnostics and View "Freeze Frame Data" lets you see what conditions the code was set under for simplified troubleshooting." Then crazy stuff up past $500 etc. I am leaning to the one above that lets me see real time data, store codes etc. Thoughts?

I don't know what it costs but the mother of all scanners is the one the MB dealers and good shops have. I think it is called SDS (star diagnostic system).
